DIARIES  &  JOURNALS

DIARIES AND JOURNALS

From the US Holocaust Memorial Museum

"Diaries bear witness to some of the most heart-breaking experiences of the Holocaust. They are a "real time" record of an individual's life. They also document the fear, loss, trauma, and sometimes even the hope felt by human beings facing extreme peril. The Museum’s collection of diaries written during the war gives voice to some of the victims and survivors of Nazism. The writers of these diaries documented a range of experiences, from daily life in Nazi-established ghettos and concentration camps to the search for refuge in America. "

"Recovered Nazi diary gives rare view into Third Reich"

(2013) Athena Jones, CNN

The Rosenburg Diary PDF

"...It was a mystery for nearly 70 years: What happened to Nazi Party leader Alfred Rosenberg’s diary, a valuable document with insights into the Third Reich?...

The influential Nazi intellectual was convicted of war crimes at the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal and hanged in October 1946. Parts of his diary – a loose-leaf collection of notes he kept from 1934-1944 were used by the tribunal, but the bulk of the diary, dating from 1936-1944, went missing after the trial."

Handwritten Documents

(2020) by Taru Spiegel

This is a Library of Congress Blog Post detailing the “By the People” project at the Library of Congress to make thousands of images of handwritten documents from the Library’s vast manuscript collections available online. Using a crowdsourcing platform, participants can transcribe the texts directly on the site and create a digital version of the document that can then be tagged, searched, and shared...With German manuscripts the challenges of transcription are...different because German-speaking Europe did not adopt the Latin style until well into the twentieth century...
