Expand the blue Editorial Actions bar and click on ‘Preview Article’ in the left column.
If the content is credible and accurate, and the language and formatting adhere to the requirements found in our Author Guidelines, click on ‘Approve’ in the Editorial Actions bar to send the article to the Cureus editorial review step prior to peer review.
If the authors were not following the Author Guidelines, and the article needs improvements due to scientific, language or formatting issues, please click 'Defer for revisions' in the blue Editorial Actions bar.
A pop-up window will be displayed including the most common formatting and language issues warranting deferral.Click the checkboxes of any relevant issues and corresponding messages to the submitting author will auto-populate in the text field. The message can be manually edited to add additional revision requests as needed.
When you're ready, click the ‘Send’ button to send the email to the submitting author. Don't worry about adding a formal greeting or additional instructions as these are already included in the email sent to the author.
You will be notified via email when the author resubmits the article after addressing the issues raised in the deferral message.
Start by claiming the article by clicking on the ‘Claim Article’ button in the Assignments section.
You will need to compare the ‘In Review’ version (displaying all peer reviewer and Adviser comments) against the ‘Editor Approval’ version. This newer version should include author responses to all peer reviewer and Adviser comments, along with corresponding revisions in the article.
We recommend opening each version in a different browser tab in order to easily identify the changes.
Assess the author's responses to ensure they have adequately considered all reviewer comments. (Authors may choose to ignore Adviser comments, although they still have to respond to them.) When you’re satisfied that the article is fit for publication, click ‘Approve’ in the Editorial Actions bar.
Lastly, take a look at the Reviewers table to view the peer reviewer recommendations to the editor, which are color-coded and displayed in bold in the ‘Recommendation’ column.
Accept (green): Denotes a positive review.
Decision pending (orange): The peer reviewer is unsure about the article and should be invited to re-review the article now that the author has revised.
Do not publish (red): A recommendation to reject. This will be evaluated and addressed by Cureus editorial staff after you have completed your editorial review.
Channel Admins are responsible for managing the channel. This includes curating content on the channel homepage via widgets (found on the Design page) and adding/managing Channel Curators. Channel Admins may review and approve/defer articles only if they are qualified to do so. Channel Admins work closely with Cureus Admins to keep their channel running efficiently.
Channel Curators ensure that all article submissions are within scope and adhere to Cureus author guidelines. Channel Curators also assist authors in strengthening their manuscripts prior to the rigorous editorial review conducted by independent Cureus editors. All peer-reviewed submissions must receive final approval by an independent Cureus associate editor in order to be published in Cureus.
Channel team size corresponds to the size of the channel (i.e. how many articles per year can be published through the channel).
1-25 articles: 3 Curators permitted
26-75 articles: 4 Curators permitted
76-200 articles: 6 Curators permitted
201-400 articles: 10 Curators permitted
Granting Channel Admin or Channel Curator Access

Channel members should be added to the Settings and Design pages.
Click on ‘Settings’ on the left nav menu.
Under the role that this new member will have (Channel Admin or Channel Curator), add their email address to the search bar and click on ‘Search’. Their information will be auto-populated if they have a Cureus account. If not, you will be prompted to provide their details. To finalize, click on ‘Add Curator’.
Highlighting Channel Admins or Curators on the Channel Homepage
Now, this new channel member also needs to be added to the Channel Design page if the Curator would like to be featured in the ‘Channel Team’ section of your channel homepage.
Click on ‘Design’ on the left side menu.
Scroll the page to ‘Homepage Settings’, and click on ‘Channel Team’.
On the pop-up window select the desired number of people by row, add their email address, title, and click on ‘ADD’.
The ‘Highlighted Content’ widget showcases content published on Cureus, including articles, posters, or abstracts, while the ‘Other Content’ section features materials from outside Cureus, such as PowerPoint presentations, PDFs, videos, or articles published in other journals. When uploading external content, you must provide a link or upload a file.
The hero image, About page image, and the text in the ‘Overview and About’ sections can be easily updated.
Our Channel Pages allow you to customize the widgets by simply moving the widgets section using drag-and-drop with the green icon on the cards.
Your About page should be more than a corporate resume. It should describe who you are. Write about your values, principles, and the mission that drives your organization. We recommend including an image of your team or organization.
As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain transparency and consistency across all channels, we require that each About page clearly include:
• The channel scope (medical fields, research areas, etc.)
• Who is eligible to submit
• Any required institutional affiliations
• A reminder that all submissions must adhere to Cureus editorial guidelines
Meetings are easy to create; they require an image and start & end date.
The dates are flexible; you can create a meeting in the past or future.
Posters and abstracts must be linked to a meeting.
The option to select 'Poster' or 'Abstract' as an article type will only be visible after a meeting has been created in the channel.
Posters and abstracts are not peer-reviewed or indexed in PubMed Central.
Authors can submit them through the channel page by clicking on the 'Submit Research' button under the hero image and then selecting the research type.
Like articles, posters, and abstracts also need to be approved by the channel after they are ‘published’ by the author.
When a poster or abstract is submitted, a red dot will appear in the corresponding tab on the channel Dashboard. The poster or abstract will be listed under the Second Channel Preview state. You should find it listed and proceed with approval.
