In this presentation, participants will learn what scaffolding is and how relevant it is for learning. After a brief discussion of the theoretical background that supports scaffolding as an effective tool for learning, the presenter will share scaffolding strategies to be used in various teaching contexts, including when the creation of materials is involved.

This minicourse aims at deepening participants' knowledge on how to test reading skills with constructed-response (CR), or open-ended, items for classroom assessments. Upon completing this minicourse, participants should leave with an improved understanding of CR item design and a set of considerations about factors that impact reading abilities which should be accounted for when designing CR items to assess reading.

Proficiency exams require a wide use of idiomatic expressions and a demonstration of adequate vocabulary particularly in the Speaking sections. How should we teach this in a natural way bearing in mind the principles of Language Awareness in the classroom? What are the difficulties incolved and how can we overcome them?

Participants will be equipped with tools and insights for immediate application in their educational settings for the effective implementation of formative assessment. In this workshop attendees learn more about Critical Project Based Learning and its practicality for linguistic education. Through the making of a project attendees are invited to reflect on and dialogue about how to break away from the "Banking Model of Education" (FREIRE, 2017).

Join our Visible Learning & Assessment session, drawing insights from the Faculdade Cultura Inglesa course we speakers took last year. Tailored for teachers, in this workshop we share impactful formative assessment practices that enhance student learning visibility. Backed by successful 2023 results from our groups, this session equips teachers with practical strategies, fostering student engagement and ensuring tangible learning outcomes in an enriching classroom environment.

Although Assessment for Learning (AfL) is described as “informally monitoring progress” (Boyd et al, 2019), can we carry it out on the spur of the moment? Hardly! Planning how and when to collect evidence of learning is extremely important to succeed using this tool. In this workshop, we will talk about AfL, experiment with planning tools such as backward design, the four-dimensional feedback, and the use of rubrics, look at samples of portfolios, self-assessment, peer assessment, reflective diaries and (why not?) even tests. We will also look at inquiry-based learning and project-based learning and discuss why these active learning approaches work so well alongside AfL.

This session aims at exploring strategies that can be handy to novice teachers, downplaying the challenges related to managing groups. Tips on how to engage students and keep them focused throughout the lesson will be presented, encouraging participants to try out new tricks.
