A Fully Accredited School

Our school's mission is to educate and prepare every student to become confident and caring life-long learners who can make contributions, communicate and function effectively in the 21st Century. As a result of the conscientious, committed, and dedicated efforts of administrators, teachers, students, parents, and the community, CHS will provide an academic environment which values excellence, initiative, and diversity.

A Message from the Principal

Dear CHS Students, Teachers, and Parents,

It is my honor and privilege to have been chosen to serve as the new Principal of Cumberland High School. My passion for supporting the academic and personal success of students has been shaped over the past 21 years as an English teacher in Maryland, DC, and Virginia, and as an Assistant Principal in Orange County, Virginia. In every school where I have worked, I have tried to ensure the success and growth of every student by providing the best possible instruction, extracurricular opportunities, and academic supports. Leading a school with well-rounded students who are both “college and career ready” is a top priority for me. I want CHS to continue to produce graduates who exhibit the “5Cs” (critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship) and fit the profile of a Virginia graduate.

In order to fit the profile of a Virginia graduate, students must possess content knowledge, exhibit workplace skills, show civic responsibility, and engage in career exploration. During my high school years, I had the opportunity to be a scholar athlete who sang in the school chorus, served in the student government, volunteered at local elementary schools, and worked summer jobs. Those personal experiences will influence my efforts to work collaboratively with our dedicated and talented staff to help all students achieve academically, athletically, and socially. I want our students to understand that it is just as important to be a good person as it is to be a good student or possess a strong work ethic.

My conversations with district leadership and staff have made it clear to me that Cumberland County is full of amazing students, teachers, and parents who have a great deal of enthusiasm for their schools, this community, and Cumberland County’s rich history. I look forward to becoming an integral part of this county and working with each of you to continue and build upon the great successes at CHS. My personal motto is, “Put people in positions to win,” and I want to do this by creating partnerships that benefit Cumberland County as a whole.

I look forward to a great year ahead of us. We will learn, grow, and improve together. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, and ideas that you would like to discuss. I have been told that in the past we have been referred to as “Team CHS.” Going forward, I would also like us to be known as the “CHS Family.”

Sincerely,

Eugene Williams, Jr.
