Emmett O’Brien Technical High School is part of the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS). We are one of seventeen Technical High Schools in the State of Connecticut.
All the CTECS Technical High Schools offer the same thorough academic curriculum. Emmett O’Brien’s diverse student body and highly qualified staff make it unique in its ability to provide individual attention to its students. Our experienced community of educators and support staff provides the opportunity for each student to learn and grow through a rigorous academic and professional atmosphere.

At graduation, CTECS students receive the same academic diploma as every other public high school student in the State of Connecticut In addition, CTECS diplomas are endorsed for the student’s trade/career skill area.
English – Offered all four years. Areas of concentration are reading, writing, researching and listening and speaking.
Science – General Science, Biology, Chemistry or Advanced Topics in General Science, Physics and UCONN ECE Physics
Mathematics – Teacher lead instruction is offered through a blended learning model, including a mastery-based ALEKS Program. Credits can be earned in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Fundamentals of Accounting, Personal Finance, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus and Statistics.
Social Studies – World History, Civics, US History and Economics/Law. CLICK HERE for a brief overview from one of our instructors.
Physical Education/Health Education – Scheduled in the first two years. Areas of concentration include physical, mental and social health, decision–making and goal setting skills.
Electives – Contemporary Literature of Our Lifetime, Mythology, Sci-Fi and Fantasy Literature, Creative Writing, UCONN ECE US History Since 1877, Forensics and Art.
Academic Enrichment:
Math Labs: Occurs during Shop Cycles and are mandatory for all 9th and 10th grade students
Student Success Plan (Portfolio): Mandatory for all 11th and 12th grade students

At Emmett O’Brien, major academic classes meet six periods per day, 5 days per week. Each class is 60 minutes long. All public high schools in Connecticut are required by the State Board of Education to meet a specific standard of class contact hours. At Emmett O'Brien, we exceed that standard.
