Outcomes and Standards
Lesson Content Outcomes:
Students will understand the concept of Black Indigeneity and its significance in Spanish-speaking cultures.
Students will put into practice their reading comprehension skills by engaging with Spanish literary texts related to Black Indigeneity.
Students will be culturally aware and develop an appreciation for the diversity of Indigenous experiences within the Spanish-speaking world.

Students can read Spanish texts at the intermediate mid-level

How do Spanish literary works explore and portray the experiences and significance of Black Indigeneity within Spanish-speaking cultures?
Como la literatura tradicional y de historias de vida demuestran la cultura de culturas de descendencia afro e indígena?
Instructional Delivery
Day 1
Present examples of cultural expressions illustrating Black Indigeneity in the Spanish-speaking world. (Use presentation included as part of the resources) - Begin by asking what they observe from the images, what connections students make, etc.
Explain the concept of Black Indigeneity in English and its significance in Spanish-speaking cultures, especially in Colombia. Provide historical context on the African and Indigenous influences in various Spanish-speaking countries.
Play the drums song as part of the introductory activity before the reading
Ask students to read the story LA VIDA EN PALENQUE and note what they understood from the reading. They have to write in Spanish but add a short opinion.
Day 2
Ask students to share their notes with the class.
Students will start completing the reading comprehension activities.
Students confirm their answers to the reading comprehension activities and prepare to discuss in groups. Students will prepare the following prompts individually:
¿Qué significa "Black Indigeneity" en el contexto de las culturas hispanohablantes?
¿Cómo crees que la literatura y las artes visuales pueden reflejar la Black Indigeneity en estas culturas?
¿Crees que la sociedad valora la contribución de las personas con Black Indigeneity en la cultura hispana?
¿Qué pasos crees que se pueden tomar para promover una mayor conciencia y aprecio por la diversidad cultural en las comunidades hispanohablantes?
Day 3
Group Discussion (30 minutes):
Students discuss each one of the prompts in groups. During the discussion, they will share their thoughts and consider different perspectives within their group. They will take turns speaking and listening actively to their peers.
Day 4
Students will create visual (collage) representations reflecting their thoughts, emotions, and insights gained from the discussion. However, as an introduction to the final part of this lesson, it is necessary that the teacher shows examples of visual art that depict cultural diversity, heritage, and themes related to Black Indigeneity.
Students can have a mobile museum where they share their collages and their reflections in written form.
