Instructional Activities
Day 1
Begin by introducing the essential question and explaining that students will explore the role of cultural celebrations in shaping identity and building community through the lens of the San Pacho celebration in El Choco, Colombia.
Present students with the essential vocabulary for community celebrations
Show the class a map of Colombia and locate the region of El Choco and some photographs and videos of the San Pacho festival in El Chocó, Colombia.
Ask students to observe the images and videos and take note of the activities, typical costumes, music, dances, and typical dishes they see.
Briefly explain the cultural elements of the San Pacho festival in El Chocó, Colombia, using comprehensible input. (date and focus on the essential activities people do, ) USE VISUALS INCLUDED WHILE TEACHING
Teach new vocabulary related to the San Pacho festival in El Chocó, Colombia, which is not included in the first list.
Students do a listening activity where they must identify the new vocabulary they have learned. This activity is part of their input stage.
Students share with their class what their notes were and what they could understand from the recordings.
Day 2
Start class by reminding students of the question of the day in Spanish that each member will answer: Cuál es el elemento mas importante en una celebración en tu comunidad y por qué? Cuál crees que es el elemento mas importante de la celebracion del San Pacho, por qué?
Briefly explain the cultural elements of the San Pacho festival in El Chocó, Colombia, using comprehensible input. (date and focus on food and music ) USE VISUALS INCLUDED WHILE TEACHING
Introduce students to the appropriate language proficiency level reading. Read aloud using TPRS strategies and ask students to keep in mind any question or comment they have regarding the celebration.
Students will work on work on an interpretive reading activity.
Day 3
Start class by playing the video San Pacho Bendito
The teacher can show students some Latino dancing moves and ask them to join the group dancing activity for 5 minutes.
Ask students to sit down and ask them to complete the KWL Chart for a short group discussion.
Divide the class into five groups where they will prepare to discuss some topics presented in the magazine by Blandón Mosquera, V. (2019) San Pacho Bendito Magazine. Universidad Católica de Pereira.
Day 4
Students will discuss the question: What is the role of religion in Afro-Colombian celebrations?
Divide students into groups and give them supplies to illustrate discussion findings on poster paper. They will present their answers to the class.
Finish the class by sharing this video and asking them to find similarities between this region in Colombia and where San Pacho is celebrated.
