Writers Note: Welcome to Duluth Dining Delights, where I give you reviews and recommendations on different restaurants, cafes, and eateries around the Duluth area.
When relatives come to town, friends need a meal idea or I’m looking for a restaurant with options, Bridgeman’s is always a go-to. Between Aldi and Miller Hill Mall, Bridgeman’s is a vision in blue, from its outdoor design to its old-school teal booths.
I always refer to it as an upscale Perkins with more options. Its variety of options covers lunch and dinner, but Bridgeman’s is perhaps known best for its breakfast menu. While I’m no expert on the restaurant, my three trips there have involved trying some of its most popular items, both sweet and savory.
Two months into school at St. Scholastica, my boyfriend and I decided to go check out the restaurant we had driven by time and time again. After eyeing the menu for about ten minutes, my indecisive mind finally made a choice: the Fiesta Avocado Toast. As an avid avocado toast lover, I was hoping my expectations would be met… and indeed they were. On top of two pieces of large sourdough bread nestled pieces of smashed avocado, basted eggs, their house-made pico, feta, and chipotle sauce. The savory breakfast-type meal was perfect for dinner.
While it looked small to me at first glance, it was a challenge to finish the meal due to the bold flavors and how full I was after just a few bites. There was so much packed into two pieces of bread and the ingredients paired perfectly. After dinner, the thought of Bridgeman’s famous ice cream was tempting at first, but we decided we’d have to try it another time.
Fast forward to this year, and I found myself back at Bridgeman’s for dinner with some friends. This time, I decided to change it up and try something sweet. I took the waitress’ recommendation and ordered the Stuffed Swedish Pancakes.
The crepe-like, strawberries and cream-filled pancakes arrived only ten minutes later and, once again, I was shocked by the presentation and flavor. The thin pancakes, still warm off the griddle, complemented the sweetness of the strawberries perfectly, and I savored every last bite. My friends ordered similarly sweet breakfast items, and we all agreed that we hadn’t been disappointed.
Only a day later, we returned to try out their signature “Mega Malts,” themed for Valentine’s Day. These giant malts change themes four times a year, but I have yet to see a lineup that doesn’t look delicious. I ordered the “Heart Breaker” which was packed with flavors and topped with trinkets. An Oreo malt, it was adorned with whipped cream, a heart cookie, heart shaped sunglasses, and a plastic red ninja toy. The entire drink came in a souvenir plastic cup, complete with a lid and straw. For $15, the malt was worth every penny.
Bridgeman’s is perfect for any meal and any craving. While I have yet to try the dinner and lunch inspired items, I can happily say that the breakfast meals satisfied my sweet and savory cravings on each occasion.
