The National Geographic Bee is an annual competition organized by the National Geographic Society, designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Students in grades four through eight (4-8) from 10,000 schools across the United States will compete in the 2018 National Geographic Bee for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic Bee Champion.

CJHS Geography Bee Timeline


  • The Preliminary Round will occur in all social studies classes on Thursday, October 31st, 2019.

*Approximately the top 30 students will be invited to participate in the competition.


  • The School Competition with approximately the top 30 students* will be held on Monday, November 18th, 2019, after school in the CJHS multipurpose room until students are eliminated.

Semi-Finals 2:45-3:45 pm

Finals 3:45-4:30 pm

Championship Round 4:30-4:45 pm


  • The school winner will advance to take the State Qualifying test by mid-January


  • The top 100 scorers in the state will advance to the Illinois State Geography Bee. Students will be notified by March 2nd. The Illinois Bee will be held this year on Friday, March 27, 2020. In previous years, students from CJHS advanced to the state competition in 2016, 2010, and 1996.


  • The Illinois state winner will take part in the National Championships at the National Geographic Society Headquarters in Washington, D.C. (dates TBD). The National Championships are televised and prizes include college scholarships for national winners. The last time a student from CJHS made it to the national competition was in 1996.
