Under the blistering Makati sun, the Colegio San Agustin-Makati (CSA) High School Open Football Team delivered a scorching performance in their Rizal Football Association (RIFA) opener as they toppled Don Bosco Technical College-Mandaluyong (DBTC-M), 5-1, on home turf on Saturday, August 16.
From the opening whistle, CSA set the tempo, leaving little room for Don Bosco to move out of their half of the pitch. The starting front three of Jaewon Lee (11C), Liam Miranda (11G), and team captain Inno Lorenzo (12F) began the match running circles around the DBTC-M defense, earning chance after chance.
Lee opened the scoring after just over 10 minutes of action, not taking long for him to double his tally after he won an aerial duel against the Don Bosco defense.
CSA’s beautiful first-half play was orchestrated by their midfield trio of David Myers (11D), Gurtaj Dhaliwal (11F), and Ethan Ang (10D) as they laid out incisive passes, weaving through the Don Bosco backline and creating numerous goalscoring opportunities.
However, most of these chances narrowly missed the mark, slipping past the goalpost or being saved by the Don Bosco goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, on the other end, DBTC-M won a free kick from close range, but failed to pose a challenge to the CSA keeper, being one of their few chances of the half.
With the first 45 minutes wrapping up, substitute Jeyan Papa (9A) made an instant impact, dancing through the defense and placing it in the bottom-right corner of the net as Don Bosco found themselves in a three-goal deficit.
Papa’s magic struck once more during the start of the second half as he got a brace of his own after slotting the ball past the keeper to further widen CSA’s advantage.
CSA remained poised in the second half as their backline, marshaled by Marcus Reyes (10G) and Franco Reyes (10H), closed every window of opportunity for Don Bosco to break through. The attack also continued to push forward through set pieces and runs, while fresh legs Francis Wozniak (11C) and Caden Alvarez (11D) sustained the team’s energy.
With 20 minutes left, Jado Wehbi (12A) tapped in CSA’s fifth goal and nearly bagged a second goal moments later, only for the keeper to deny him.
Don Bosco finally broke through late, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to earn a consolation goal and spoil CSA’s clean sheet.
With the satisfying 5-1 result for his team, Papa remarked,
“It was a great game, and I’m happy. I’m looking forward to scoring more goals and becoming the champions.”
With three points secured and a commanding start, CSA looks to carry their momentum into their succeeding RIFA fixtures.
