Coming off a solid homecourt showing, the Colegio San Agustin - Makati Girls Volleyball Team (CSA-GVT) soared past Beacon Academy (BA) and Miriam College (MC), both in 2-0 sweeps, in their Inter-Scholastic Sports Association (ISSA) games last October 4, at the International School Manila.
The girls immediately took control of the game, jumping out to a double-digit advantage over BA, and capitalizing on their opponent’s errors. CSA-GVT extended their lead to as much as 18 points before they ended the set, 25-8.
In the second set, CSA held the advantage, but BA found gaps in CSA’s defense as both teams exchanged blows, forming an 8-8 stalemate. Breaking the deadlock, CSA, led by middle blocker Kristen Tabora (10H), went on an 8-1 run to carve out a comfortable seven-point cushion.
In a timeout, Coach Marie Grace Vita continuously emphasized the importance of focus and court awareness as her advice steered her team to a 25-17 set, ultimately closing out the game in favor of CSA.
After the game, she also reminded the girls that even if they won their first matchup, there was still work to be done. The team looked to continue their rhythm in their next game against MC, a familiar foe they toppled last year in an exhibition match.
The team carried that same energy into the next game, setting the pace early with quick rotations and consistent serves that helped them find their rhythm and control the game’s flow
Midway through the first set, their composure built them a sizable lead with effective blocks and a pair of service aces. Building on that momentum, Tabora finished the set, 25-16, with a powerful spike.
The second set opened with both teams trading points, keeping the score tight at 7-5. CSA then found their rhythm, going on a 7-1 run that forced MC to call two timeouts.
Led by Sam Gabrido (11C) and Eliana Salcedo (11A), CSA held the upper hand and took advantage of MC’s mistakes to widen the gap. MC rallied late to close the gap to 22-16, but CSA stayed composed and in command.
Gabrido sealed the match with a decisive spike to close the final set at 25-17. The victory marked CSA’s 2nd straight 2-0 set sweep of the day, rounding off a superb display in their ISSA campaign.
“Our chemistry really showed today with every point we contributed, and that unity made our back-to-back wins possible,”
says Team Captain Annika Pascua (11C), adding that with a few more adjustments, the team is confident about carrying their success forward.
With a 5-0 record, the CSA-GVT is more than eager to keep soaring as their victories secured their qualification for the ISSA semi-finals.
