Assignment 7: Practice writing a statement

Before you begin

• Go over the module Skill: Academic writing if you did not attend the lecture on Week 7.

Description

For this assignment you will practice academic writing as part of an application for an undergraduate research position.

• Step 1: Choose an undergraduate research position (REU or other) that you would like to apply to. Include a link to the position description in your assignment submission.

• Step 2: Identify and carefully read the instructions for a writing prompt as part of the application. Include these instructions in your assignment submission for reference. This could be:

  • An essay with a particular topic

  • A statement of purpose

  • Answers to specific questions or prompts in a form that you need to fill

• Step 3: Write a draft trying to follow as much of the advice you have heard. You should create your draft in a Google Doc so we can give you direct feedback on the statement via comments. You can talk about how you decided to take CSE 390 R, how you read the particular paper as part of the class, what you learned from it/what you liked about it, and how it influenced your desire to pursue undergraduate research.
