We will have 8 quizzes throughout the quarter. See the calendar for quiz dates and topics.
Grading
- Quizzes account for 30% of your final grade.
- We will drop your lowest quiz score from your grade.
- These quizzes replace our exams as summative assessments - adjust your expectations accordingly! Don't expect to get 100% on each one. In the past few quarters, our exam median tended to be 70%. Some quizzes may be more challenging than others.
Logistics
- Quizzes will be administered in Canvas. Each quiz will be timed and allow you 20 minutes from the time you start. You may take the quiz anytime during the 24-hour (Seattle time) day on which it is assigned.
- Each quiz will be given the school day after a homework is due (e.g. hw due Thursday, quiz Friday. hw due Friday, quiz Monday.)
- Each quiz will cover material from the previous homework and section, potentially some lecture and reading material from that timeframe (e.g. all material will be on the relevant topics, you won't have questions from yesterday's lecture).
- Open book, open notes, (internet and computer use ok since we can't monitor that), but CLOSED to talking with other students.
- Here is a Canvas quiz that will let you become comfortable with the tool and styles of questions you may see. Note that this quiz allows you to retry it multiple times for practice; our real quizzes will not have this option.
- You can expect to have 1-2 programming or long answer questions per quiz, with more of an emphasis on multiple choice, true/false, or fill-in-the-blank types of questions.
- Students will randomly be presented with different, but equivalent, questions.
Accommodations
- Aim to take the quiz earlier during the day and have uninterrupted internet access for those 20 minutes, no accommodations will be made for students who have trouble with last-minute submissions. The only accommodations for quizzes that will be made are those that correspond to the University's official accessibility guidelines, which must be reflected in your student account.
- Make-up quizzes will only be given in case of a serious emergency. If you miss a quiz, even if you are sick or injured, you must contact Alyssa BEFORE the quiz deadline (or arrange for someone to do so). You must show evidence that you are physically unable to take the quiz. No make-ups will be granted for personal reasons such as travel or conflicting schedules.
Collaboration
- QUIZZES MUST BE COMPLETED INDIVIDUALLY with no communication with anyone about content or answers.
- As noted in the syllabus, we take academic misconduct seriously and will give students a score of 0 for any quiz for which they violate the Student Code of Conduct.
Study resources
- Section handouts have good practice problems.
- The table below lists problems from former exams, categorized by the topic and format so you can focus your study. The "mixed" topic has many true/false style questions. (Will be updated with even more problems later.)
- Since this is the first quarter with Canvas quizzes, we do not have practice quizzes available. You can expect similar types of questions to the ones from former exams, with a little more emphasis on T/F or fill-in-the-blank questions.
