Introduction

Whole body cryotherapy (WBC) is the therapeutic application of extremely cold dry air between −160°F and −220°F to a surface of a skin for duration of 2 - 4 minutes.

Whole body cryotherapy is indicated for those that need to achieve critical athletic or beauty performance. The cryotherapy stimulates the body's natural healing abilities. The whole body cryotherapy uses extreme cold to induce responses on three levels: the circulatory system, the energy meridians, and the nervous system. The history of whole body cryotherapy began in Japan, developed in Europe, and migrated to the U.S. Clinical studies are numerous and focused on treatment of pain and inflammation from sports injuries, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis.

How it works?

The liquid nitrogen vapor is being used to cool the single-person cryosauna to between -160 to -220 F. This is the same nitrogen that makes up most of the air we breathe. In order to protect the more temperature sensitive tissues such as hands and feet, patients wear dry socks, slippers, and gloves. Despite extremely low temperatures, this treatment is very safe and during session you feel physical ease and relaxation.

Multiple research studies have been published in medical journals about the effects of whole body cryotherapy. For example Dr Lee showed that during cold exposure and exercise, levels of the hormone irisin (produced by muscle) and FGF21 (produced by brown fat) rose. Specifically few minutes from cold exposure resulted in equivalent rises in irisin (this is a hormone that helps you burn fat) as doing an hour of moderate to heavy exercise! Study was published Feb 4, 2014; In another Italian study the Cortisol and DHEA showed a reduction already after the 2 WBC sessions of the first day! and after 14 consecutive WBC sessions cortisol, DHEA, and estradiol levels decreased, while testosterone increased as did the testosterone to cortisol ratio. In many European countries the treatments are covered by medical insurance policies. In the United States, cryotherapy is considered a wellness modality and health insurances do not offer reimbursement for the service.

Model Gigi Hadid calls it her beauty “secret weapon" and LeBron James uses it to improve his athletic performance, Even Lady Gaga does #cryotherapy to help with her chronic pain issues! Discover the science behind cryotherapy
