August 18

The first days back to school for second grade have been fantastic. The students are really doing a great job of getting into the classroom routines and procedures.

We have been learning a lot of new things during our first few days. In Reader's Workshop, we have been learning about characters and asking ourselves questions about the characters in our stories. We have been using books written by Kevin Henkes as our mentor texts. We also started working on writing personal narratives in Writer's Workshop. The students were given tiny topics notebooks to jot down ideas for stories that they think about throughout the day. In math, we started working on addition and subtraction strategies. We reviewed number bonds and how to make a ten when adding.

We have a couple of reminders:

    • Please make sure to check your child's purple folder in his or her backpack every night.

May 6

Happy May! We have a lot of activities going on as we wind down the year. We want you to be aware of all of the great things happening in the next few weeks.

First, we want to share that this will be the final full week for Mrs. Johnson. We will be sharing this with the students on Monday. Please feel free to share this with your child this weekend. We will be encouraging the children to create cards and notes to give to Mrs. Johnson on Thursday, May 11. We will miss having Mrs. Johnson in our community. Mrs. Johnson has been a great asset to our second grade teaching team. She will be graduating from the KCTR Residency program on May 13 and has accepted a teaching position at Crossroads Schools - Quality Hill for the next school year. We wish Mrs. Johnson great success in her future years as a classroom teacher. We will have an opportunity to see Mrs. Johnson for a few days after next week. She will come in a few extra mornings during our testing week to help out in our classroom.

On Tuesday, May 9, our students will be performing in the Spring musical at the Folly Theater. Students should arrive at the theater by 6:45 p.m. We invite all family members to come and see the performance. The students have spent several weeks practicing for this musical and they are really excited to share this with you.

On Wednesday, May 10, we will be going on a field trip to the Kansas City Zoo. We will leave school at 9:00 a.m. and return to school at 2:00 p.m. We still need several parent volunteers to help chaperone groups on this field trip. If you can help, please sign up at the CACS Volunteer Portal at this link.

We are currently working on our shared research projects for our Animals Around the World unit. The students are working with partners to research facts about animals. Each group will be creating one page for our animal website that we will share at our publishing celebration at the end of May.

Our final publishing celebration will be scheduled on Wednesday, May 31, 2017. The students will be sharing their poetry anthologies and their shared animal research projects at this final celebration. The students are really looking forward to sharing their final published pieces with their families.

Finally, we will be taking our last NWEA tests during the week of May 22-26. Please help us to encourage your child throughout the testing week. We will be encouraging the students to eat a healthy breakfast every morning and to get plenty of rest during this week.

Have a wonderful week!

March 23

We have a field trip scheduled to Kaleidoscope on Tuesday, March 28. We need 8 volunteers to help with the various stations at Kaleidoscope. We will leave school at 9:00 a.m. and return to school around 11:00 a.m. Please sign up at the CACS Volunteer Portal at this link. We appreciate your continued support. Please remember that all volunteers must have an approved background check on file in the office.

March 12

Please join us for our Enchanted Village Publishing Celebration from 12:30-1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14. Our scholars are so excited to share their character suitcases and fairy tale stories with you.

Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on Wednesday and Thursday from 4:10-8:10 p.m. Please use this link to sign up for a conference. If you are unable to attend on one of these evenings, please contact us at secondgrade@crossroadsacademykc.org to set up a conference at another time. We look forward to meeting with you and your child.

We want to make sure our students have the materials they need to succeed, so we just created a request for our classroom at DonorsChoose.org:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Reimagine DonorsChoose Project.

If you know anyone who may want to help our classroom, please pass this along!

Spring Break will be from March 17-March 26.

Have a wonderful week!

March 8

Parent-Teacher conferences will be scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday. Please use this link to sign up for a conference. We look forward to sharing your child's progress with you.

February 20

We're coming near the end of Unit 4 and a lot of projects are underway. We have several groups of reader's theater performances getting ready to perform for other classes. The students have been practicing and preparing for a couple of weeks. We plan to videotape their performances and we will post them on the website, so you can enjoy them also.

We will be having a publishing celebration in the next few weeks. We have lots of stories, letters, and digital products to share. Be on the lookout for invitations to our celebration.

Parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled on March 15-16. We look forward to sharing your child's progress with you.

Please remember to send coats and/or jackets with your child every day. We know that the weather has been unseasonably warm, but we want to be prepared just in case a cold spell comes through. Some days, recess can be a little chilly since we get out before lunch.

If you would like your child to work on his/her learning log goals at home, then please visit the platforms page to find out about how to access the platforms at home. Students should work on the platforms independently, because the platforms are adaptive and they move at each child's individual pace.

Don't forget to check the snack calendar. The students really look forward to that end of day snack, especially since we have an extended school day.

Thank you to all the families who helped to make our Friendship Party a huge success. The children really enjoyed the food, games, and celebration. Your support is truly appreciated!

The weather forecast looks great for the next few days. Enjoy the warm weather and spend some time outside this week!

January 23

We have been working hard in our new unit. We are learning about recounting and comparing fairy tales, folktales, and fables. We are also learning to write friendly letters and fictional narratives. This will be a very busy unit. We will be working on a lot of projects related to fairy tales, folk tales, and fables. Please ask your child to recount some of the folktales that they have read or heard in class.

In math, we are learning about regrouping in addition. We will be moving on to regrouping in subtraction in the next week. The students have been showing good progress in learning this skill.

We will have our friendship party on Tuesday, February 14. We will be exchanging valentines on that day. If your child brings valentines on that day, please have them bring one for each of the students in our class. We will pass out the valentines throughout the day, then we will have the friendship party from 2:30-3:30 p.m.

September 15

It's hard to believe that we've been in school for over a month. Thank you for helping your child come in prepared to learn each day. Second grade is a big transition for our scholars. We have been working on building our scholars' stamina in reading and writing. It takes a lot of grit and hard work to become independent readers and writers. Please continue to encourage your child to try his or her best each day.

Please remember to check your child's purple folder each day. Don't forget to sign the reading log and homework calendar each night. We have also started sending home your child's Personalized Learning Plan log sheet in the purple folder. The purpose of this is so you can see some of the tasks that your child has completed each day. Your child should be able to share what they have been learning with each of the items listed on the log.

Book orders are due by Friday, September 16. You may send the orders into school or order online at Scholastic.com. Our class code is LKPXB.

If you have not attended one of the mandatory technology meetings, the next scheduled meeting is on Thursday, September 22. Please take time to attend if you have not done so yet.

Next Wednesday, our second grade students will be having their first publishing celebration. We invite you to come and listen to their personal narratives from 12:30-1:15 p.m. The children have been working really hard throughout the entire writing process and are excited to finally get to share their stories with you.

We are also finishing up our first unit in reader's and writer's workshop. We will take our ELA post-assessment on Tuesday, September 20. We will celebrate the end of this unit with a "Read-In." Students may wear appropriate pajamas and bring a small stuffed animal to school on Thursday, September 22. Students should come to school in their uniform. They can change into pajamas at school. We will spend the morning reading our favorite Kevin Henkes books, watching a few Kevin Henkes book videos, and eating popcorn.
