Hello Radez Students! This page will be updated on Tuesday and Thursday. It will include activities for you to try at home! There is also a comment box below for you to leave me a message or ask me a question!
Percussion instruments include any instrument that makes a sound when it is hit, shaken, or scraped. It's not easy to be a percussionist because it takes a lot of practice to hit an instrument with the right amount of strength, in the right place and at the right time. Some percussion instruments are tuned and can sound different notes, like the xylophone, chimes or timpani and some are untuned with no definite pitch, like the bass drum, cymbals or castanets. Percussion instruments keep the rhythm, make special sounds and add excitement and color. Unlike most of the other players in the orchestra, a percussionist will usually play many different instruments in one piece of music. The most common percussion instruments in the orchestra include the timpani, xylophone, cymbals, triangle, snare drum, bass drum, tambourine, maracas, gongs, and chimes.
This is a Marimba!
Is this instrument played by being hit, shaken, or scraped?
Is it tuned (can play a melody or tune) or untuned (can only play rhythms without a melody)?
What other instrument(s) does the marimba remind you of?
A movement is a musical piece that can be performed on its own but is part of a larger composition (a piece of music). Each movement has it's own mood or theme.
The videos above are the 2 movements in the Two Mexican Dances by Gordon Stout. How are they similar or connected? How are they different? Which one is more interesting to you?
