Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the Wendigo, Mothman, dragons, and mixed-up creatures....
These monsters and mythical creatures have inspired stories for hundreds of years. Are they really out there? Keep reading to find more TRUE FACTS about monsters.
All places in the world have their own culture and all cultures have different types of monsters.
One thing in common about many monster stories from around the world is that monsters are meant to scare people, but people find a way to defeat them.
Hundreds of years ago during the Dark Ages people made up stories about monsters to stand for big problems they had in their world like death and disease. It was easier for them to blame the "monsters" than to solve the problems.
Mythical creatures like Hydra, Bigfoot, Kraken, Yeti, and the Loch Ness Monster are also known as cryptids. Most cryptids have not been proven to really exist, but they are similar to some real animals that do exist or existed in the past.
Cryptids are not dangerous to humans. They are more scared of you than you are scared of them. There is no evidence of cryptids actually hurting humans.
Cryptids are creatures like Bigfoot and Mothman that people claim they have seen. Maybe they have, maybe they haven't! No one knows because there is no clear evidence.
Mythical creatures like unicorns, dragons, and Pegasus are based on imaginary stories that people from different cultures made up. No one has actually seen those creatures. They are just part of the myths and legends of the culture.
The Komodo dragon, giant squid, and okapi are real animals found in the world today. People used to think these animals were fake until they were found for real.
Komodo dragons were found on an island in the Pacific Ocean. The okapi were found in rainforests in Africa. Giant Squid were first found near Japan.
Now that technology has improved, if cryptids are real we have a better chance of finding them using drones, surveillance cameras, and very detailed high-definition color cameras.
Even though technology has improved so much, we still haven't found any evidence of most cryptids, although real animals such as the giant squid have been discovered deep in the ocean around Japan and Australia.
By using technology, scientists can explore more places and see if the sightings of cryptids are true or false.
So are monsters real, yes or no?
Most monsters we don't know for sure if they are real, because we don't have the proof whether they are real or fake.
Some "monsters" we can tell are fake, like dragons and unicorns that come from mythological legends and folktales.
And a few "monsters" have actually been discovered to be real animals, like the giant squid, Komodo dragon, and okapi.
The only monster that I know exists for real is my teacher, Mr. Beekman!
The Wendigo is a mythological monster from the Algoquian tribe. It is a thin creature with ashen flesh that grows larger by eating humans.
The Hydra is a creature from Greek mythology with many snake-like heads. When one head is cut off, two more heads grow in its place.
The Kraken is a mythical sea monster usually shown as a giant squid or octopus. Sailors created this legend to explain what caused ships to disappear.
Photos and videos have been made of a creature that some people claim is Bigfoot. AI technology is proving that most of this evidence is fake.
In Greek mythology, Pegasus is a divine, immortal winged horse.
Real or fake? This animal called okapi looks like a strange mixture of giraffe and zebra. Some people thought it was a mythical creature until okapi were discovered in the rainforests of Africa.
Drones can explore deep in the thick rainforest where people can not reach.
At one time, the giant squid was thought to be a mythical creature. It was not captured on film until 2006.
Mothman is a cryptid that was supposedly seen in West Virginia in 1966 and 1967. The name was probably inspired by the Batman comic books and TV show during that time.
