If you could go to space and go as far as you wanted, would that be the end? What would it be like to keep on going and going? Will it keep going forever? Probably everyone wants to see what and maybe who else is out there.
At the beginning of the universe there was only time or space. Everything was under an incredibly high pressure and temperature all squished together in one big, hot tight spot.
Most astronomers use the Big Bang Theory to explain how the universe began. The Big Bang Theory is like a giant explosion that begins the universe. But what caused this explosion in the first place is still unknown.
The Big Bang Theory says the universe started with an extremely hot and dense single point which stretched first at unimaginable speeds, and then kept stretching at a more common rate over the next 13.8 billion years. Based on this theory, the universe is still expanding today.
The Big Bang Theory is scientist's explanation for how the universe began. In the beginning , the universe grew from an extremely small point to nearly an octillion (that's a 1 followed by 27 zeros) times that in size in less than a trillionth of a second. WOW!
Here is the number octillion: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. That's HUGE!!!!
Scientists figured the size of the universe depends on its shape and how fast it is getting bigger. Most astronomers think that the universe is about 13.8 billion years old and stretches out for 93 billion light-years... and it is still growing!
The universe is at least 250 times larger than the observable universe, so scientists can only make theories about how big it really is.
Since the universe just keeps expanding, the universe is infinite. You cannot reach the end because it is always expanding. Going to the "edge of the universe" is something that only exists in fictional movies. You also can’t travel to the end observable universe, which is the part of the universe that we can see.
This is an artist's interpretation of the universe. Whose hand do you think that is? Going back in history, many cultures have believed that humans on Earth were the center of the universe.
People were not around when the big bang happened, but this is one theory might be what it looked like.
Is the universe infinite or does it just stop at a point?
Georges Lemaître (1894-1966) is the astronomer and cosmologist who first proposed the Big Bang Theory.
This image represents the observed universe. More exists beyond the observed universe, but how much more and how much farther we don't know.
Fictional characters like Buzz Lightyear may travel "to infinity and beyond," but you can't really travel to the end of the universe.

Far beyond Neptune and Pluto is the end of our solar system. It is called the Heliopolis. The Heliopolis is where the sun's gravity has little effect because it is too far away. Beyond the Heliopolis lies deep space.
The sun is an average-sized star, but it appears much bigger and brighter than all of the other stars in the universe because it is closer to the earth.
