What is Energy?

Energy is everything. Energy gives you strength to do jobs like working or cleaning.

The sun gives the Earth most of its energy.

Different Types of Energy

• Potential

• Kinetic

• Mechanical

• Light

• Sound

• Electrical

Potential Energy

When an object would change its position it's called potential energy. Potential energy is energy that you can use after you store energy. Things that are twisted or stretched have potential energy.

Kinetic Energy

The energy of atoms and molecules vibrating is heat, and heat is a form of kinetic energy.

When you move it is called kinetic energy.

Mechanical Energy

Mechanical energy is a mix between kinetic energy and potential energy.

Parts that work together is called mechanical energy.

Light Energy

Plants trap light energy to make their own food from the sun.

Things that are transparent, such as glass windows, light energy can pass through.

Light energy is the only one energy you can see.

Sound Energy

Vibrating a wave of molecules moving from object to object is called sound energy.

Sound energy is the only energy you can hear.

Electrical Energy

Electrical charges are movement by electrical energy.

Electrical energy is movement of electrons from object to object through conductors such as metal.

The way electrical energy travels is through a closed circuit.

Other Energy Uses

First, in order for the plants to produce oxygen into the air and food for animals to eat they need sun and water. Plants use the light energy from the sun.

Second, without energy there would be no movement, light, heat or noise, and nothing could live or grow.

Third, in order to keep warm, use our brains, keep our hearts beating, keep breathing and moving, and do all the things we want our body to do, we need energy. When you eat food, you get energy from the food you eat. Chemical energy is stored in the food we eat.

Fourth, to heat your homes and to cook food and power machines, you need energy.

Without the sun we would not have energy and without energy we would not be alive.
