Who is James Naismith?

     James Naismith is the inventor of the game called basketball. He was working with classes of boys at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts in November 1891. James Naismith took two peach baskets and he put one basket on one side of the gym and put the second basket on the other half of the gym. The baskets were around ten feet off the ground. This started the first basketball game. 

First Basketball Games

     During the first basketball game, James Naismith started to explain the rules first before starting the game. The boys didn’t understand and the game turned into a huge brawl in the middle of the gym. After James Naismith was done explaining the rules the boys were not confused any more. After a while basketball became one of the boy's favorite sports.

How Basketball Became Popular

     James Naismith made the first basketball rules. The rules have changed over the years to help make the game even more popular. Later in James Naismith's life he saw basketball become a very popular sport played all over the world by both men and women.

     Basketball is the fourth most popular sport in the world. The top three sports in the world are soccer, the Olympics, and tennis. Professionals in the United States play basketball in the NBA, but basketball is also played in college, high school, and community leagues for youths, adults, men, and women. Also, basketball is just played for fun on playgrounds everywhere.

     There are many different leagues for people to play all across the world, such as in Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and South America.

Team Sport

     Basketball is a game that is played between two teams. Each team has five players on the court at the same time. Usually a basketball team also has extra players who sit on the bench at the start of the game. If a player needs a break, gets hurt, or gets too many fouls, a bench player can come into the game as a substitute.

Positions

     Most basketball teams are made up with two guards, two forwards and a center, too. The guards are usually the smallest but fastest players. Guards often do a lot of passing and shooting. The center is usually the tallest player on the team. Centers play closer to the basket and try to block shots and defend the basket.

Basketball Shots  

     A jump shot is when the team is releasing the ball while they are away from the basketball hoop. Most basketball shots that go in the basket are worth two points. Some far away shots are worth three points. Fouls shots are worth one point.
