Google Sheets is an app for spreadsheets, like Microsoft Excel.
You must have the Google Sheets app (from Self Service) on your iPad in order to view and edit Google Sheets.
If you open the Google Sheets app, it will give you a list of Sheets you have stored in your Google Drive, organized by when you last opened them, so if you're returning to the same Sheet frequently, that can be an easy way to find it.
You can also search for a Sheet by name, using the magnifying glass in the top right corner.
You can also open a Sheet by finding it in your Google Drive app, and your iPad will automatically switch to the Google Sheets app for viewing the Sheet.
Use the plus sign in the bottom right corner to start a new spreadsheet file.
Choose "New Spreadsheet" or click the pencil.
Type the title for your spreadsheet.
Start typing in your spreadsheet.
Tap on a cell to start entering text. You type it in the "Enter text or formula" line at the bottom of the screen, and it appears inside whichever cell you had tapped on. When you finish, you can tap Return to go to the next cell down, or you can tap on another cell.
If you're only entering numbers and math symbols in your spreadsheet, tap the 123 button to get a numeric keyboard. Then you will see a button that says Aa, which will let you return to the alphabet keyboard.
Once you're done entering text, tap the checkmark. From this view, you can format the cells.
Once you're done editing, tap the checkmark next to the file name. From this view, you can add Sheets (tabs) to your file.
Once you're done with this file, tap the back arrow next to the file name, which will take you back to your list of files.
Once you tap in a cell of your Sheet, formatting options will appear across the top of your screen:
B will make text bold.
I will make text italic.
U will underline text.
S will strike through text.
Choose A to change the color of text.
Tap on the lines to change alignment (left, center, or right).
Tap on the vertical arrows to align text to the bottom, middle, or top of the cell.
Tap on the three lines with the curving arrow to make extra text in a cell wrap around into multiple lines.
Tap the square with four boxes to change the borders of the cells.
Tap the boxes with the plus signs to add a row above or below the cell you are working on, or add a column to the right or left.
In the top right corner, there are more options:
Left arrow to undo whatever you did last, to fix mistakes.
Right arrow to redo whatever you did last.
A with lines for more text formatting options, including font, text size, text color, and rotating text.
Plus sign to insert a chart, image, or comment.
3 dots menu for more file options, including sharing and exporting options, and making the Sheet available for working offline.
If you want to be able to work on your Sheet someplace where you don't have internet access, just make it available offline:
Tap on the 3 dots menu in the top right corner.
Tap the toggle switch to make the Sheet available offline.
