Expectations for Learning

Expectations for learning specify what students should know and be able to do as they strive to achieve learning goals. In each unit section, students will demonstrate how well they have mastered communication in each of the three modes:

  1. Interpersonal
  2. Interpretive
  3. Presentational

8th Grade

Unit I: Going Shopping – The 38th Lesson

1. Turn in Written Performance Task – Use learned sentence patterns to interpret the dialogue At the Store in Chinese on Monday.

2. Make a Situational Dialogue with one or two peers:

I can carry on a dialogue with a peer about Shopping at a department store/clothing store/shoe store/grocery store/electronics store. – Check on Thursday.

Roles: 1) Shop assistant and shopper 售货员/店员 和买东西的人

2) Two friends or school mates 同学或朋友

What should be included:

1) Beginning statements: Each describes the situation and his/her role

2) Get information about the product you want to buy

3) Bargaining

4) Ending: your feeling about the stuff you’ve bought

5) Vocabulary of color, size, names of products, etc.

1. I can orally present the general information of the school I study in – Complete checking on Tuesday.

2. I can retell or recite L.2 text, giving a detailed description of the class based on the content

of this lesson.

1. I can use adjectives in a sentence to give a richer, more meaningful and better picture of what I am describing (mountain, flowers on the mountain, fruits here, his backpack, dumplings, the game, the song, etc.)

Can-Do Statements:

1. Presentation – (Oral) I can describe my backpack and tell what is in it using correct measure words related to the object names.

2. Presentation (written) – Draw or bring a family photo, then give a description the people in your picture / photo, tell the relationship of the people in it. Using the phrases in the lesson, such as, 女儿,儿子, 叔叔, 阿姨, etc.

3. Interpretive

I can read, identify and connect appropriate measure words to the names of objects, such as: 个, 支, 本,把

4. Daily writing:

a) I can express time correctly in Chinese in both oral and written form.

b) I can write a paragraph about myself based on the following outlines:

2. Interpersonal: I can carry on a brief conversation on giving suggestions to go somewhere.

3. I can write a mini paragraph about Myself; referred to the following outline:

Can-Do Statements:

1. InterpersonalI can use Chinese to greet people in different situations. I can express thanks and respond when people thank me.

2. Interpretive - I can recognize, read and identify the Chinese characters for 你好, 谢谢,不客气,再见, 眼睛, 头发, 手, 猫,狗, 鱼。

3. Presentational - I can give an oral presentation on My family and I.


1st grade

Unit I: Meet Children Around the World

Can-Do Statements:

1. I can count, read and identify the numbers from 1-120.

2. I can identify and read any randomly presented numbers from 1-999.

3. I can use Chinese to say the names of five countries: USA, China, Mexico, UK, France and Japan. I can identify their flags and locate the countries on a world map.

4. I can use Chinese to greet people and then introduce myself in three sentences.

Unit: Meet China

Can-Do Statements:

  • I can count numbers in Chinese from 1 to 20.
  • I can sing in Chinese and do the dance: Hello China, Hello US!
  • I can sing and greet teacher in Chinese: Hello Teacher
  • I can say Thanks in Chinese when teacher welcomes us entering into the classroom.

Participation - 20 % Assignments (in-class & HW) - 25 %

Quiz - 25% Performance Task - 30 %


Standard-Based Grading System for 3rd-5th grades

Interpretive - 30% Interpersonal - 30%

Presentational - 30% Others - 10%

3) Three aspects of using the target language effectively: Interpretive, Interpersonal, Presentative

II. Training on how to participate in a Chinese Free talk activity.

III. Training on how to be effective in a Daily Writing activity.
