In 2000, Jeff Wall staged an elaborate photo of a basement illuminated by 1,369 lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling. The artwork was inspired by the book Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. As Wall read the book, the photographic scene came to Wall's imagination in what he calls "an accident of reading". Inspired by the picture in his head, Wall had to go about creating it.
