Make Us Better

Only you know what it's like to take Computer Science in CPS. In order to get better at what we do, we need the kind of expertise that only students can provide. Join the Student Advisory Council to improve the future of Computer Science education for the every student in Chicago.

How It Works

Once a quarter, you'll come together with ten to fifteen other students from all over the city, from all different types of schools to learn from each other's experiences, and come up with ways that Computer Science for All can prepare teachers and curricula to better serve our students. In between quarterly meeting, small teams of students meet to work together on the different SAC initiatives and projects.

Who Can Apply?

Anyone in Middle School or High School can be on the Council, as long as you've already taken a Computer Science course at a CPS school. We want people from all types of schools, including charter and option schools, to be in the room talking to us about their experiences.

Eligibility Criteria

  • You've been a CPS high school student for a total of at least 1 year by the beginning of your term of service as a Councilmember
  • You've taken at least one CS4All computer science course
  • You complete all of the application materials on time, and, if selected for an interview, attend and complete your interview!

If you have questions, please contact Melissa Cobian | mcobian1 [at] cps [dot] edu

What Makes a Good Application?

Your application should tell us about you. Why do you want to join the Student Advisory Council? Why do you care about computer science education? What are some changes you'd like to see in Computer Science at CPS?

Applications consist of:

  • Your application
  • A recommendation from a non-family member adult who can speak to your work ethic, character and teamwork skills (e.g. teacher, mentor, community organization, guidance counselor, etc.)

If we like your application, the next step is that we'll invite you to a group interview session led by students currently on the Student Advisory Council!
