Social Studies at Mitchell: A Brave and Anti-Racist Space
Social Studies at Mitchell Elementary School is being taught within an anti-racist framework. According to Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, a leading scholar in anti-racist theory, students in anti-racist settings learn to engage with issues related to race and racism. The ultimate goal is to help students understand that people of different racial and cultural backgrounds should be seen as equals.
In addition to learning about history and our society through this lens, our intention is to provide students a safe and brave space to process current events. Students can expect to regularly engage with current and controversial issues in class. We hope that our young people will continue the discussions we begin in class with you at home.
