Throughout my career, I’ve been driven by a passion for STEM education and have always been curious about the ethical integration of technology. Across every environment I’ve worked in, my goal has been to create meaningful, inclusive learning experiences that support learners in applying new knowledge to real situations.
Starting out as an outdoor science teacher and naturalist, I quickly saw how powerful inquiry-based instruction and hands-on exploration can be. That early foundation, strengthened through my MA in Teaching Biology, helped shape the way I design learning experiences. I focused on connecting scientific concepts to authentic, real-world contexts, and over time, expanded my experience by developing and leading personalized STEM curriculum programs. These experiences reinforced my belief that learning becomes most memorable when learners can interact with ideas directly and make personal connections to the content.
As I moved into higher education, I brought that same learner-centered approach into academic advising and student support. In my current role as a STEM counselor at California State University, I guide students through academic planning, career exploration, and navigating campus resources. I have designed digital learning materials, help develop essential workshops, and coordinate events that build both confidence and community. Through this current position, I was able to form my own code of conduct for technology and emphasize the importance of ethical, inclusive, and responsible uses of it.
Now pursuing an MA in Instructional Design and Technology, I am continuing to expand my perspective on learning and innovation. I’ve become increasingly interested in AI ethics and environmental impact, prompt engineering, and the potential of emerging tools to support student success. Whether I’m creating digital resources, facilitating workshops, or collaborating with others across departments, I strive to design environments where learners feel supported and prepared to apply what they learn.
Reflection
I was originally drawn to instructional design because I like figuring out new ways for people to learn. From my outdoor education experience, I have adapted a lot of learning material in different formats and methods. I hope to bring that same creativity and excitement to my future projects as an instructional designer. Being a part of this program has amplified my tools and ability to reach a larger audience and provide accessibility for more learners. As I establish myself further within the instructional design community, I hope to stay engaged with ongoing conversations about accessibility, AI ethics and environmental impacts, and the future of digital learning.
