Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! This week we were 2nd Grade Super Spies!! We had codenames, super spy notebooks, spy clothes, and disguises! Super Spies are calm, cool, collected, and quiet; we think fast, but we move sloooowwww. Super Spies are focused on finding details, which we used to do a focused study on Main Idea and decoding shopping Word Problems. On Monday, we were promoted from 2nd Graders to Super Spies. On Tuesday, we began practicing finding clues in our work. Wednesday, we were spies in disguise, and continued our clue finding for work AND played some cool games, which tied into our studies! Thursday, was the big Mission Day! Starting in the morning, we received a mission report from High Command! Throughout the day we tracked down different kinds of clues as we worked our way through the mission. In the end, working together, we solved the case and discovered the location of the secret gratitude letter written for Ms. Pam! We signed it and then traveled over to give it to her in her office.
This was an outstanding week, and we lived out our motto!
Super Spies always try.
This week in Language Arts, we used our Super Spy status to work through multple stories together, looking for clues which could reveal the Main Idea! To set the stage for this, we practiced writing down observations in our super spy notebooks. We learned about perspective, which is the way we see things. We went to the Dream Court and faced middle school, to write down an observation. Then we turned to face the Dream Court, and wrote down another observation in our notebooks. After we finished, we went back to the classroom to discuss the variance and similarity in perspectives. This framing dovetailed directly into our analysis of Main Idea, discovering that the Main Idea can usually be a handful of different things, and all supported by verified details.
This week in Math, we used our Super Spy sklls to decode word problems! Using our powers of analysis, we concluded multiple clue words in math problems. "Total" or "all together" means we're going to do an addition problem. "Change" means "difference," which means we need to do a subtraction problem. "A" means only one of something! These are clue words, detectable by Super Spies! We then devised a system of working through shopping word problems. 1) Write down the information and price 2) Line up our numbers and add them 3) If there's change, then we subtract the smaller number from the larger number. We found that this system is a consistent way to allow us to find the right answer. Super Spies for life!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
SECOND GRADE SUPER SPIES.
While we did have a truly incredible week of being Super Spies, the culmination of Mission Day was the greatest moment.
Our mission called for us to find out who deserved more appreciation, and then to track down what was going to be sent to to this person.
As we worked through the clues, we found out that whatever we were searching for was going to be for Ms. Pam! The item we eventually tracked down was a gratitude letter for Ms. Pam. We did a check to see if we all agreed with the letter, and we did! Then we signed the letter, and gave it to Ms. Pam. She was nearly speechless with tears, and said it made her day.
Now THAT is loving your neighbor!
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
