Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! We had so much activity in the classroom this week; so many memories made. Big shout out to LaNina for kicking off the year as our first Library Reader! You were fun, and engaging, and dramatic, and musical- the kids had a blast! And speaking of kids, Rhyann turned 187 today (please tell her I said that 😂)! We love celebrating birthdays. Thank you Chitra and Rafael for bringing the celebration to us, and also for those awesome goodie bags! The hugs and high fives should continue, because 2nd Grade performed their Spanish song today in front of the whole school! That takes really bravery.
Also!! BIG shout out to Beau for being our first "Hero of the Week!" The Hero of the Week is someone who went above and beyond with their class job that week. 😊
This week in Language Arts, we continued our work with the tion sound! We also spent some time working on past tense this week, navigating the doubled consonants and ed. A big part of what we do is practice our writing through different prompts- this week, we had to generate curiosity questions about Octavia E. Butler from our fun facts page! That was a challenging, but rewarding, experience which let us know we all can write more than we knew! This week was also the first Spelling Quiz! Woooooo, words! Overall, it was a very grounding experience. One takeaway has been that we need to focus in order bring our best effort.
This week in Math, we spent time reinforcing our logic and calculation skills. We expanded our time reading from quarters after and past to any 5 minute interval! It's a big leap and we took it head on, using different strategies to figure out the time. Counting money is fun, but having to count across different coin values takes focus! We were also introduced to Sudoku puzzles! We started with a 4x4 (a few friends are on 6x6 already!), practiced it on the board, and then were able to do it on our own (mostly)! It's a great "waiting for the Teacher" or "I'm done, what do I do now?" activity. Every single one of us worked very hard on our Math work this week, and it showed!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. What we focused on this week, and will be honing in on in the weeks to come, was the practice of meditation. We spent time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
This week, we learned about EMPATHY!
We watched a video by Brene Brown, where she talks about the difference between sympathy and empathy. This fun animated video then went on to show us what it looks like when true empathy takes place.
After watching the short video, we held a class discussion about it. Everybody shared either a takeway from the video or their own empathy story which they connected to the video! This was a deep, but necessary and accessible chat. Empathy is what fosters connection.
