Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! This final week leading into Spring Break was all gas and NO brakes! The girls worked hard all week on their Madam President speeches, most of which included more than one draft. Whew! It took some work, but it was worth it. They also organized their own rehearsals outside to prepare for their presentations, which they absolutely smashed! Thank you to all of the parents who were able to make it out! Your presence made it an extra special moment. While our Madam Presidents were working, the boys were writing short essays (one paragraph) about why it's important for men to support women. This week we also had a wonderful time at our TCS pancake breakfast, fellowshipping while fundraising for the 8th grade trip. Friday's diversity festival as an especially grand time as well! We enjoyed the drum circle, had foods from around the world, learned about different cultures, and shared our own artistic expressions with chalk! It was lovely! Annnnnnnnnnd we also closed out our week with the final installment of our class script (but shhhh... don't press them too much about it... we want the movie to be a surprise for you all). However, they were quite thrilled to read the conclusion of their movie. We begin filming soon as we return from spring break. 😊
Also, we are going to dearly miss Teacher Michelle from first grade. When she broke the news, there were a lot of big feelings, which is a testament to how wonderful of a person she was.
This week in Language Arts, we spent most of the time using our skills to write our Madam President speeches, and our Chief Advisor short essays! Incoporating our expanding knowledge of how words work, and how they are spelled has been a growth challenge for the class. As we humorously point out- spelling isn't just for the spelling quizzes. We must be mindful at all times when we are writing. That goes for quotation use, contractions, and sentence structure. Although the schedule did not permit us to have the actual spelling quiz on Friday, we did work on our words throughout the week and practice using them in sentences. We've also been practicing our reading comprehension, meeting the question "I read it, but what does it mean/what am I supposed to?" with the grounded accountability question of "well, what do you think it means/what do you think you're supposed to do?" Asking these kinds of questions helps develop a child's problem solving skills- aiding in the resistance against learned helplessness- while also fostering an environment of authentic learning, where they feel safe inquiring about things they may genuinely not know.
This week in Math, we continued practicing our timestable! We've been in a review period, which has been a helpful way to create quicker paths of mental accessiblity for some, and a means of learning/re-learning some of the earlier timestables for others. As a class, we actually hit a huge milestone this week with word problems! We revisited a shopping word problems activity sheet, which we had done twice prior over the span of four months, but THIS time... everyone in the class was able to successfully complete 80% of the problems with little to no assistance, and only needed minimal help with the remaining problems. This is amazing growth and showmanship of their critical thinking skills, which will serve them so well in the third grade. We also revisited Cafe Cafe, and everyone was so much smoother with the flow of their roles and calculating their costs/change!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
WOMEN BELONG EVERYWHERE.
Our Madam Presidents were absolutely incredible with their speeches and deliveries this week! Each speech was insightful and heart warming in its own way, and reflected the budding profundity embedded in the scintillating souls of these glorious children.
Transformation is a numbers game; the more children that grow up with these formative experiences, the greater the chance for radical positive change in the world overall. It's also worth noting that transformation happens as a direct result of authenticity. This project didn't take place in a vaccuum. They were provided a grade level appropriate understanding of what the history in this country has been. They were informed, and out of that state, created their vision and their talking points.
These are the types of people the world needs more of. Informed, audacious, visionary, and wholly given to the empathetic practice of loving one's neighbor, no matter what your role in society is. Our country needs more people like this; and these are the kinds of people we strive to co-create alongside you parents here at TCS. Thank you for your partnership, and for trusting us with your precious legacy.
