Happy Weekend, 2nd Grade Families! Welcome back! Happy New Year! It was so great re-uniting this past week, and being all together as the 2nd Grade Super Team. We took our time easing back into the flow of being at school, and all of our routines! We took the time to share our stories about what we did over break, and we played a number of academic games to soft reboot our learning brains. A big topic of discussion was our movie!! Everybody remembered that the biggest part of coming back from Winter Break is that it signaled the beginning of us reading our scripts! We talked about the movie making process, from script reading to green screen, and they all know at some point next week they will walk into the classroom and see their scripts on their desks. But which day will it be? Noooobbbbooooody knows. 👀😄
This week in Language Arts, we eased our way back in day by day. The good part about our relaxed pace is that we were able to revisit some topics very casually, and spend more time on them. One of our revisits were identifying Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives. That was particularly fun, because before we made those identifications, we had to read sentences which contained a grammatical error and rewrite them the correct way! So that whole exercise had a couple of layers to it, which is always great! We also did some journaling, and logged in some good reading comprehension with a short story. On Friday, we also had our very first pop quiz! Pop quizzes are by no means a regular practice, but it served the purpose of checking how much they remembered about their spelling words. However, they were all made aware that the pop quiz wasn't going to be graded and sent home- it was purely just so Mr. Josh could get a gauge on where everyone was at. 😊
This week in Math, we took that day by day as well! In fact, we introduced MATH JEOPARDY for the very first time this week! It was so fun! Our new seating arrangements placed us in easily identifiable teams, and we were able to play with virtually no hiccups! It was a great way to give everyone a certain level of autonomy (picking their category and level), while also engaging their math minds. This game also allowed us to spot which areas the kids weren't fully confident in, which allows us to even more accurately strategize for the future! In addition (get it?!) to Math Jeopardy, we also worked on a couple of math packets across different days. The focus wasn't necessarily to finish the entire thing, as much as it was to discover what we remembered and what we needed to brush up on. We had a lot of fun this week!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
WE TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER.
As you all may remember from Parent Info Night at the beginning of the year, Mr. Josh passionately stated- "If we teach your kids everything they need to learn, but they're not good people? Then we've failed." That mindset flows through everything we do in the 2nd Grade.
In that spirit, we introduced two games to the kids this week. One was a game we affectionately called "Tony Tone Tone!" At the begininng of this game, we generated a number of emotions as a class, and put them up on our color wheel. Then Ms. Rashawn would write a sentence on her white board for us to read. Mr. Josh would hit the spinner, and whatever it emotion it landed on was the one we would have to deliver the sentence with! It was great fun, but also great practice for being mindful about how we say things.
The second game came straight from Ms. Rashawn's illustrious background as an improv actor! It was a game where 4 of us would step outside with Mr. Josh to wait to be called in. On the inside, they would come up with a 3-4 sentence story. Then they would call us in one by one, to act out what they had just heard or to describe what they had just seen. The last person in side had to try and guess what the original story was. This was also a lot of fun, and highlighted the importance of clear communication and how perception shapes reaction.
Both games spawned amazing conversation, and also served as callback touch stones throughout the week during times of conflict. 2nd Grade is so back!!
