FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 2026
Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! What a fantastic second week we've had! We hit the ground running with newly redesigned Language Arts packets, Math packets, and a new inspirational class jingle! We began our second round of MAP assessments this week, and revisited our "Tony, Tone, Tone" game to practice how we speak to others. However, the biggest news coming out this week issss (drum roll please) WE RECEIVED THE FIRST PART OF OUR SCRIPTS FOR OUR CLASS MOVIE!! WOO!! The students were beyond ecstatic to finally begin our process of movie making. Red carpet, here we come!
Shoutout to Sarah for kicking off our Library Readers for 2026! How cool to have a book that has letters and maps inside of it for us to read and look at! Thank you for sharing your books with us!
This week in Language Arts, we dove all the way into parts of speech! While we had been familiar with nouns, verbs, and adjectives before, this was when we began to concretize that knowledge. We worked our way through the same set of three sentences, identifying different parts of speech in three different panels. On one particular day when the wiggles were strong, we went outside to the meadow and made a game of it! We raced to Mr. Josh, who then told us a sentence and then asked us to identify either a noun, verb, or adjective. It was friendly competition, and a fun way to keep learning while getting those wiggles out!
This week in Math, we took our time revisiting borrowing! When we did our assessment packets last week, borrowing was a throughline of challenge for the class, so we took the time to double down and re-firm that skill. We also learned that the rules of borrowing are the same, whether we're calculating regular numbers or calculating money! Wow! Our other major focus this week was the science of multiplication! While we have been using music to memorize the facts, we have now begun learning how to break down a multiplication problem (2x5 means 2 groups of 5). We also discovered that multiplication problems work the same both ways, so when we learn ONE multiplication fact, we're actually learning TWO! How cool is that!?
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.
We spent some time this week on our Martin Luther King Jr. writing project. We learned that he was a complicated man, whose ultimate power was his unflinching willingness to call out evil when it occurred. His position of non-violence, while not shared unilaterally amongst his supporters, revealed that as long as the end goal is the same, there are many ways to get there. He was a remarkable man.
Our very own Teacher Rashawn brought this energy to powerful life today during Friday 15, with her rendition of "We Shall Overcome." Let it be known and remembered for all time- without "we," there is no community.
