Happy Weekend 2nd Grade Families! We had a short, but impactful week! We're learning all about our responsibilities, and we're starting to understand how it works! Nobody else is responsible for our responsibilites besides us. We're getting it, and developing our self awareness skills on a brand new tier. Also, Paxton officailly joined the 2nd Grade this week!! Woo!! She visited about a week and a half ago, and this was her first official week as a new Second Grader at TCS. We were all SO excited to see her, and spend the week welcoming her into our little family. She fit in perfectly! WELCOME TO TCS, PAXTON!!!
Special shoutout to David, or "Daisy's Dad" as he's known in the streets, for being our library reader this week! We love having you around to read to us. "The Lorax" was especially fitting and a well timed reminder aobut taking care of nature and our planet.
This week in Language Arts, we continued working on quotation marks and contractions. We've also begun refining our penmanship and generative writing! We're using each of our spelling words in a sentence every week, and we're making sure we're using appropriate letter size and punctuation in all of our writing excercises. Our storytelling has also gotten more creative! As a class, we're growing more comfortable with teling our own stories, whether they're 100% original or our own original stories based upon charactes in a pre-existing world. Regardless, the creativity is flowing! Singular Possesive (using the apostrophe s) has remained one of our foci this week, as we practice smoothly transforming a statement like "the wand belonging to the wizard" to "that is the wizard's wand." Once we've gotten that down, we'll move on to Plural Possessive!
This week in Math, we continued our 9s timestables work and we're all really locked in! The 9s have been embraced by everyone and we're remembering them! This week was also a continuation of fractions! We're identifying fractions, fraction parts, and started navigating simple word problems with fractions as well! This was also the first week doing "Power Pods with Mr. Josh"! Each table group received direct one-on-one time with Mr. Josh on their own individual day. They had the time to ask specific questions for anything they found challenging, but may have not had the opportunity to engage him with. Additionally, this time also introduced the entire class to LONG DIVISION. Gasp! Egad! Gadzooks! 2nd Grade is cooooooking right now!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. We've also incorporated music into this time together. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
I AM SOMEBODY.
This week, the mighty Reverend Jesse Jackson passed away. His impact cannot be overstated, and his mission cannot be overvalued. He was a rare man of vision, who was able to address the times such as they were in his day, while also addressing them from the future state they needed to evolve into. Suffering is not the sum total of any Black person's story.
He was a visionary. Part of what this meant is that he recognized people as people, and did not require straightness as valdiity for existence. Nor did he view anybody who wasn't straight as less than human, or different in any way that mattered. He was an ally before being an ally was truly a thing, which is the same as to say that he saw all people as people. Period.
Mr. Josh and Teacher Rashawn performed a joint spoken word and music piece together during Friday 15. Reverend Jesse Jackson was acknowleged, and his signature affirmation (I am somebody!) was shared with the whole school. Furthermore, the poem performed was all about not just living in the past... it was about holding the awareness of the past, while also liberating us all to move into the future. I AM SOMEBODY. And that someobdy deserves life, love, health, and dreams come true.
