Hello Red Room Families,
This week, the Red Roomers focused on love, kindness, and friendship. We began by talking about the people we love. Many children mentioned their moms, and then quickly added their dads, friends, siblings, pets, and even their favorite stuffed animals. We read How Many Do I Love You by Cheri Love-Byrd, a counting book from 1–10 that emphasizes love and friendship.
We also read Valentine Surprise by Corinne Demas, which tells the story of Lily, a girl determined to create the perfect heart-shaped Valentine for her mom. Each time her heart didn’t turn out just right, she tried again and again. This story helped the children understand that the love and effort we put into something is what makes it special.
As a class, we also discussed ways to show kindness. Some children shared that they enjoy giving hugs to their parents, while others talked about playing with their siblings and friends. It was a meaningful week of exploring love, thoughtfulness, and caring for others.
For art this week, the Red Room was fully in the Valentine’s Day spirit. The first project the children worked on was watercolor painting, where each child selected a color of their choice to design their paper. Once the paintings had dried, we cut them into heart shapes and added each child’s name.
The next project the Red Room worked on was creating hot air balloons. The children used glue and colorful tissue paper to decorate their balloons, carefully designing each one with their own creative touch. Afterward, they sprinkled red glitter to add a special finishing detail. To complete the project, we took individual photos of each child and attached them to a basket beneath their balloon.
One of the books we read this week was The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond. The story follows Cornelia Augusta, a young girl who catches hearts falling from the sky during a rainstorm and uses them to create special Valentine’s Day cards for her friends.
This heartwarming story helped the Red Roomers reflect on friendship, kindness, and the joy of giving.
For art, we created our own “Day It Rained Hearts” project in the Red Room. The children enjoyed bringing the story to life through their creativity of painting white clouds and pasting falling hearts.
During center time this week, the Red Room children engaged in both cooperative and parallel play with their peers. It was a wonderful week focused on friendship and kindness. We were especially proud to see friends working together and using their words while sharing and problem-solving.
At the table, the children explored colorful lacing beads, demonstrating creativity while laughing and collaborating with one another. Some used the beads as pretend “fingertips,” while others worked to connect and design their own creations.
At the manipulative table, the children strengthened their fine motor skills while using playdough to create heart-shaped cutouts. Several friends made “cookies” for teachers and classmates, sparking sweet conversations as we heard many children asking, “Who would like a cookie?”
During our time outdoors, the children had a wonderful time playing together and engaging in imaginative activities. On the meadow, they created an exciting game of “zombies,” where some friends pretended to be zombies and chased their classmates.
Others enjoyed jumping through a mini hula hoop obstacle course, practicing their coordination and balance. On Friday, the children also played a lively game of hide-and-seek, hiding from the seeker, Ms. Crystal.
This week in music class, Mr. Brian introduced a discussion about the Winter Olympics. Several friends eagerly raised their hands to share whether they had watched the games and which sports they had seen.
He then introduced a few Olympic sports and demonstrated simple poses the children could do when he called out each one. The class also enjoyed a lively game of freeze dance, practicing their listening skills and self-control.
To conclude the lesson, Mr. Brian played the piano while the children paired up with a friend and danced along to the music.
Happy Valentines Day! On Friday, the Red Roomers had a wonderful time passing out their valentines to their friends. Each child waited patiently for their turn to deliver their special grams, making the experience even more meaningful and exciting. The Red Roomers were thrilled to see all the creative and thoughtful valentine grams they received.
Thank you to all the parents who generously donated items for our banana split party. The children thoroughly enjoyed their sweet treats! We discovered that many of our kiddos are big fans of a classic chocolate sundae.
