Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! This week, we introduced a new program called CENTERSTAGE! Centerstage is when we go up to the front of the class, and have three minutes to talk about whatever we want! We do this right at the start of the day, before jobs and the riddle, and it's completely optional every day. We use a Wheel of Names spinner to randomly select someone, who gets to come up for three minutes to speak! We do this every day, until every child who wanted to be part of Centerstage receives an opportunity that week. On Friday, we make sure to make time for whoever might be left. This has been a great, organic way to cater to the naturally theatrical/performative energy of the students, which then levels out the rest of the day! We also discussed etiquette (the proper way to do a thing) in terms of being an audience member and a speaker, and we then discovered there are many other areas in life where conducting oneself with etiquette serves us greatly!
Special shoutout to David, for being our Library Reader this week! You brought some fun stories that really captured our interest and excitement! We love your calm and gentle energy too; so much fun!
This week in Language Arts, we worked on the prefix "pre," which means "before." Right now, we've been getting a lot of practice in writing definitions. The thoughtful intention into what a word means is another useful tool in the retention of said word. Another practice we've begun to adopt is answering questions in complete sentences! It can take a little more time, which we do not always prefer, but we are slowly getting the hang of it! We also finished up our TILE testing this week as well.
This week in Math, we practiced mixing up our 2-5s times tables! We start with the ones we know already, and then make our ways to the ones we may as quickly remember. As a class, we're also learning different strategies when it comes to multiplication! We figured out that multiplying is a form of adding, which can help us when we get stuck. Some of us remember our 5 counting on the clock. So many ways to solve a problem! We also learned how to plot coordinates this week. This is an advanced level skill, but it greatly helps us in slowing down when we work, because graphing requires attention to detail. It develops our logic, and problem solving as well, which has then fed into helping us work through other types of math problems! And we also had our very first math test, woo!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
WILL YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?
This week, we had a blast from the past as we learned from the iconic "Mr. Rogers" himself!
He explained to us that loving someone who hurt you is one of the hardest things we can do... especially when WE are the ones who hurt us. In order to take care of others (our neighbors), we must first go deep down and let us love ourselves, even when we've said unkind things to ourselves.
We then learned that our neighbor is anyone we happen to be around at any time! This dovetails directly without our ongoing discussions about being anomalies, traveling the hero's journey, and having empathy.
SHOUT OUT TO CARMELLA FOR LANDING THE DUNK TANK THROW!!
