Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! We put in a lot of work into being mindful about our choices this week. "Make sure your choices are creating the day you want to have" is a common refrain in the 2nd Grade classroom this year. We're collectively growing to understand that thoughtless impulse is no way to live, and can oftentimes create scenarios we had no desire to be a part of. Bridging the concept of mindfulness from meditation into the actual decision making aspects of real life, from moment to moment, was our deep focus this week. We're 2nd Graders. And that means something special.
Special shoutout to Sarah, for being our Library Reader this week! Thank you so much for reading such fun stories, and connecting with us! We also enjoyed the thoughtful energy and enthusiasm with which you read us our first Halloween story of the season (and it was a fun story!).
This week in Language Arts, we continued working on our "ought" words. We also started some work on writing down details from a story! This week was the Spell Tale about Tha Plain, Little Pumpkin. We revisited our work with the prefix "re" and had to identify that prefix in several different words. As a little twist this week, rather than having to use those words in a sentence, we had to write the definition instead! This practice brings mindfulness to the words we're using, and organically stimulates connection to literary nuance. Using a word in a sentence is a necessary skill, but can become less mentally demanding over time. However, having to write what a word means puts in a very distinctive state of mind, which will be key to all of our writing work to come.
This week in Math, we continued practicing our borrowing skills. We're working on remembering to start on the right and from the top, annnnnd that if the top number is smaller than the bottom, we have to borrow (only 1!) from our neighbor next door. We also put this into practical use, and practiced borrowing using money! We're learning the dollar format ($0.52), and that adding/subtracting money is way easier when we use that format. We also tip toed into our 5s times tables this week. It was SUCH a fun surprise to learn that a) we had secretly learned this when we learned how to tell time and b) that 5 times tables are basically the same as 5 skip counting!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
THE PLAIN, LITTLE PUMPKIN!
This week, we launched our very first Spell Tales!!
Spell Tales are short stories which feature our spelling words for the week with high frequency, in order to reinforce our familiarity with the words, while also providing opportuinites to practice reading. While we encourage making use of this tool at home, we will also be intentional on making sure the students read the Spell Tale outloud to a teacher at least once a week.
On Fridays, Mr. Josh will read the Spell Tale outloud to the entire class as a fun little treat to close out the week. This week's Spell Tale was about The Plain, Little Pumpkin who learned there's nothing wrong with being plain. Or little. Being ourselves is a big responsibility, and nobody can dictate how we navigate that journey.
