Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! We are still applauding the absolutely iconic performance that your children gave today! Their poetry was personal, and SUCH a bold choice to read in front of the whole school! They brought great energy, clear voices, and admirable professionalism. Rashawn walked them through industry level warm ups, they had a practice session about voice and energy with Mr. Josh, and they had two full run throughs this week, facilitated by Rashawn. However, it was YOUR KIDS who put it all together and gave everything they had. We debriefed after snack, to share how we felt about the performance. So many incredible shares. And we as a class also took the time to acknowledge our fellow classmates who didn't read before the school. We ALL are worthy of celebration for doing the work, whether we volunteered to read or not.
Special shoutout to Sasha, for being our Library Reader this week! Your bubbly, enthusiastic, vocal performance was completely riveting! Thank you for sharing your gift of story delivery with us! We were all entertained, and totally hooked.
This week in Language Arts, we began work on the "ought" sound. Our words were "bought," "fought," and "thought." What a bizarre language English is! We also began our study on "prefixes" this week, beginning with "re." That means to do again. We also had Michael Jordan as our character study in this week's Language Arts packet. Many of us were so shocked to learn he played an entire game while having the flu! Another cool thing that happened, is that we were introduced to a new Spelling Words game! Rashawn facilitated a fun, team based spelling game, which was super awesome! We also got to use colored buzzers, which all had super fun sound effects!
This week in Math, we stepped into the great big world of borrowing in subtraction. This one showed out in an entirely unexpected way, because we found out it requires more focus! We have to check to see if the top number is smaller than the bottom number, and if so, then we have to go next door to borrow! Then we have to ask ourselves- "How much do we borrow?" We only borrow 1! Are we done? No! The one we borrowed transforms the original number into a new, two digit, number. From here, we can now complete the equation. This layered process has been our first introduction to the idea of formulas. Que lindo!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. In addition to the practice of meditation, we're also focused on building community. We spend time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
As you all know from that stellar dad joke during parent info night, scaffolding is the heart and soul of what we do in 2nd Grade. This also includes the building out of our moral sensibilities!
Having navigated the interconnected worlds of what it means to be an Anomaly, different vs distinct, empathy, refusal to succumb to stereotypes, and so much more... now is the PRECISE time to bring it all together.
Being considerate. Selfishness is an endlessly accessible quicksand, perfectly willing to use our desire to be "good" people as the very essence which drowns us. However, being considerate is the forever cure to any kryptonite; it is the central element which gives our best efforts at kind living any merit. This was the video we watched to kick off our discussion.
