Happy Friday, 2nd Grade Families! Today, we had an absolutely mindblowing performance from Aztec dancers, to close out Hispanic Heritage Month! From the pounding drums, to the ornate traditional clothing, to the rhythmic dancing, it was truly an unforgettable experience. We also later made the connection between Aztecs being indigenous to Mexico, the way Tainos are indigenous to Puerto Rico. Today's closing discussion was awesome. Also, shoutout to LaNina and Kofi for pulling a dream team team up as our Library Readers this week! It was super interactive, entertaining, had sound effects, and was full of riveting chemistry! Thank you so much!
Annnnnnd super extra special shoutout to Rhyann for being our HERO OF THE WEEK this week! Congratulations for going above and beyond with your class job this week!
This week in Language Arts, we continued our work with "ight" and "tion" words. We did some group work on figuring out how to decode/sound out different kinds of words. We also completed the second week of our Language Arts packet Hooray Highlight, Selena Quintanilla! We learned some more fun facts about her, and wrote a whole paragraph about other things we were curious about. We kept up our work with dictionaries, and alphabetical order for our spelling words. Speaking of spelling words, this was the week we had our first cumulative spelling word test! Everyone handled it very engagingly, and brought their best! Also happy to note that, there has been a classwide improvement in spelling word comprehension and accuracy!
This week in Math, we stepped into the great big world of carrying in addition! We went over the steps that set us up for success; 1) Start on the right 2) We work from the top down 3) Carry forward! Our time telling ability is getting stronger, and many of us can point to the class clock and tell us what time it is! Minute intervals can be a little confusing (gotta focus on the hour and minute hands!), but we're very close to mastery! This week in Math, we also continued our work with place value! Being able to identify place value, and break down numbers, is such a great skill, that will serve us specifically down the line when we begin our multiplication equations. Very impressively, we have also moved into practicing our 4s times tables this week, wow!
One of the powerful things we do here at TCS is introduce meditation and mindfulness to our students on all levels. What we focused on this week, and will be honing in on in the weeks to come, was the practice of meditation. We spent time in the morning, after our warm up activity, breathing and meditating to get our bodies aligned and our minds settled into their optimal flow states for the day. Flow state is essential to life; out of flow state, comes organic evolution.
This week, we've had some big discussions on power and what it's for.
As we learned more about the Spanish colonization of Puerto Rico (originally Boriken), we noted that their signature trait was ruthless attack on people all over the world.
However, even though the Tainos were conquered... they never stopped fighting back. Which begs the question- What is worth fighting for?
The class came up with really great answers, from protecting someone who's being bullied all the way to stranger danger happenings. From there we concluded that power is meant for two things- to help. And to protect. This language has now become a staple in the classroom as we examine the choices we make with our power, both physical and verbal.
