Non School Uniform Day. Students are asked to bring in £1.00 for their House Charity

Over the past three weeks, a group of our fantastic Year 7 students have been working hard in preparation for their performance at the St Pauls Carnival. Last Saturday, they took to the stage at the Elders’ Lunch at the Malcolm X Centre and delivered a truly wonderful performance.
They represented Cotham School with pride, energy and enthusiasm, showcasing not only their talent but also their commitment and teamwork. We could not be prouder of what they achieved.
A huge thank you to all families for your continued support and encouragement - your involvement plays such an important part in making opportunities like this so special for our students.

The Children’s Commissioner for England, Dame Rachel de Souza, has launched The Big Future, a national survey giving children and young people a direct voice in shaping future government policy and decision-making.
We want to ensure our students' experiences, views, and aspirations are represented in this national picture.
Who can take part? All children and young people.
How long does it take? Just a few minutes.

We will be highlighting this opportunity in school, but we would be incredibly grateful if you could encourage your child to fill it out at home. Thank you for your support in helping ensure our students' voices are heard.

Refugee Week at Cotham
We held a fantastic range of events to celebrate Refugee Week throughout the whole of June at Cotham. Following last week's article, which outlined the activities that took place across the month, here are some snapshots of these wonderful events.
This year's theme is Courage, and we have run so many wonderful events, led by Miss Andouard and the EAL team - but supported by every member of our community.
From workshops for Year 7 on Kindness delivered by the Roots of Belonging organisation, to parent support groups and staff training; from cake sales, author events, and film screenings to cultural clothes fashion show; from our familiar Cooking Club to an incredible experience for students who created beautiful music with Dovetail Orchestra - we've had so many fantastic opportunities to learn more about different cultures and also about our role in creating a welcoming society in school and beyond. In addition, all students have discussed and explored the refugee experience in various subjects across the school. We are so proud to be a School of Sanctuary, and have loved highlighting the kindness, courage and compassion that is on show every day in our wonderful community.
Dovetail Orchestra:
Thirty students from Years 7 to 10, representing a wide range of backgrounds, including asylum seekers and refugees, took part in the workshops led by the professional musicians from Dovetail Orchestra. Throughout the sessions, students shared music from their home countries, celebrating the rich diversity within our school community. One of the highlights of the workshops was a beautiful original song, created collaboratively by the students, showcasing their creativity, teamwork, and shared experiences.

Assemblies:
We were incredibly proud of our students with lived experience, who delivered inspiring speeches in assembly about what courage means to them. Their honesty, resilience and powerful reflections inspired our whole school community.
Cooking Club:
Our regular Cooking Club brought together students and their families for another enjoyable session. Participants prepared delicious homemade dishes from their home countries, sharing not only their cooking but also a part of their culture with everyone.
We had the opportunity to sample a wonderful variety of flavours, making it a truly enjoyable experience of sharing and tasting. At the end of the session, families took their homemade meals home to enjoy together.
Catwalk:
We ended the week with our wonderful Cotham Cultural Catwalk, where students proudly showcased traditional clothing that celebrates their heritage and identity. It was a joyful celebration of the rich diversity within our school and a wonderful reminder of the inclusive, welcoming community we are proud to be.
Hands of Courage:
There has also been a Hands of Courage display in the library, where students were invited to write what courage means to them.
Across the month, a writing competition on what courage means was promoted. We have two winners, Merina and Suzan. Congratulations to both of them!
Finally, our cake sales and Home Clothes/Cultural Clothing Day raised an incredible £400.40!
A huge thank you to everyone who supported these events. The money raised will go towards our School of Sanctuary Fund, helping us to provide enriching opportunities for students seeking asylum or with refugee backgrounds, including educational trips and workshops such as the Dovetail Orchestra workshops.

Cotham Library spends lots of money every year replacing lost books so PLEASE look under beds and in cupboards for all of your books! Exciting Changes to our School Catering from September – Catering Vacancies Available
We are delighted to share that, from 1 September 2026, our new catering provider, Innovate - Impact Food Group, will be joining our school community.
Over the coming week, we will be sharing more information about their launch, along with details of the exciting new menus, services, and enhancements that students and staff can look forward to.
As part of their preparations ahead of the September launch, Innovate is currently recruiting for a number of catering roles. If you, or someone you know, may be interested, please see the opportunities below for further information:

Legoland Trip
We are super excited to be going to Legoland on Wednesday 15 July. A letter has been sent home with all the information needed for the day.
Here are a few reminders:
Students to arrive at school via the WEST GATE no later that 7.45am the gates will be open from 7.30am.
Packed lunch and water bottle/drinks.
FSM - lunches will be taken to the park.
Legoland accepts cash and card for drinks and snacks.
Be prepared for the weather - sun cream, hat etc.
It is NON school uniform.
Medication: if you require an asthma inhaler or EpiPen please ensure you bring it with you.
Expected time back at school is 6pm.
We are travelling on four coaches, in tutor groups, and students are aware of what number coach they are on.
Guide Dog Visit
We are very excited to welcome Winnie the guide dog and her owner, Pat, to school next Tuesday. We are hoping the weather won’t be too hot for Winnie!
During their visit, we’ll be delighted to present them with a large cheque for the fantastic amount of money we have raised this year in support of Guide Dogs. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this wonderful achievement.
Guess the number of Sweets
There has been lots of excitement this week as students have been trying to guess the number of sweets in our two competition jars! One jar is filled with delicious lollipops, while the other, in keeping with our World Cup theme, is packed with chocolate footballs.
Good luck to all our Year 7 students as they make their guesses. We can't wait to find out who comes closest!

Year 7s Journey into Books - Reading Reports
Year 7 has had an amazing reading journey. They are terrific readers, enjoying FICTION books a lot especially Skandar, Dork Diaries, Alex Rider and the Percy Jackson series. (Wimpy Kid too!) Also, the amount of football books READ has been impressive! They are a pleasure to have in the library and I wish them a wonderful summer of reading ahead!

The students have been stoic as they navigate their way through the school day in another round of hot weather. Sports Day the previous week was thankfully a little cooler. The PE department put on a fantastic day for the students with lots of inclusive events and then track events in the afternoon. It was amazing to see how many fast and also endurance runners we have in Year 8. It was really heartening to see the students cheering and supporting each other.
As well as lots of sporting talent, it seems we have some really wonderful acting talent in Year 8. Congratulations to the Drama and Music department for a wonderful school musical. Little Shop of Horrors was brilliant and so much talent from Year 8. Well done all!
We are looking forward to our trip to Thorpe Park on Tuesday. Students will need to be at school for 6.45am and we anticipate arriving back at school by 6.30pm depending on traffic. Please ensure your child brings a packed lunch, sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle. They can also bring a little money if they want to purchase snacks.

Year 8 are amazing readers, they had a slow start to the year but have made up for it by reading so many books in the last few months. They adore the Percy Jackson series, and Authors Holly Jackson and Alice Osman. I love talking to them in the library and I wish them a wonderful summer of reading ahead!

Finishing Strong
This year has seen a real culture shift from Year 9. Attitude, behaviour and engagement with learning have all seen a fantastic improvement with incidents of reported poor behaviour falling by over 50% on last year. this is obviously a great achievement and I would like to thank all parents and carers for their support and help in achieving this fabulous accomplishment. This obviously has a great benefit across the school and in no area more so than academic progress.
Awards for Achievement, Attendance and Attitude to Learning (AAA) have been at unprecedented levels with over 100 students recognised at various points throughout the year.
I have also received over 500 notifications of students receiving Cotham Shout Outs from staff for various examples of great work ethic, individual examples of kindness and respect, and a host of other commendable behaviours that make Year 9 such a fantastic year group.
The options process went very smoothly and students met this important part of the school journey with maturity and common sense. I know that the vast majority of the year group are looking forward to getting stuck into their new subjects and relishing the challenges that Year 10 will bring in the classroom.
We have had some great individual sporting successes too. Tom from 9NBR goes from strength to strength competing in national swimming events. Similarly Raghav and Sylvie competing successfully in rowing at Dorney lake Olympic Venue earlier this year.
At midnight on 22 June, 47 bleary eyed students and 5 equally bleary eyed staff went on an unforgettable trip to the Black Forest in Germany. The 4 days were full of amazing experiences, fantastic views and a lot of laughter. The students were amazing, even when the mercury reached a whopping 41 degrees.
I am very excited for Year 10 and look ahead with optimism. The maturity and calmness that the vast majority of students have displayed this year give me cause for this optimism and I know that working together we can propel your children into a fantastic Year 10 and ultimately a successful Year 11.
In the meantime, please have a restful, safe and rejuvenating summer and I look forward to working with you all again when we return in September.

Broadening Horizons: French Exchange Students
This week, we are absolutely delighted to welcome three French exchange students to our school community as part of the long-running Bristol-Bordeaux Exchange Program.
Our visitors have jumped straight into school life, pairing up with their Bristol student hosts to experience everything from our daily lessons to local extracurriculars.

Year 13 Art Exhibition
Last week, we celebrated the success of our talented Year 13 Art students with an exhibition of their fantastic work. We celebrated with students, their family and friends, and members of Cotham School staff. The exhibition inspired many of the younger students at Cotham, as they were able to admire the work and see what their next few years of their art journeys could look like. We are incredibly proud of the Year 13s, and we wish them all the best with their futures and creative endeavours!

Cyantype Workshop
This week, our Year 10 Art students stepped out of the classroom and into the sunshine for an exciting, hands-on Cyanotype workshop.
Using this traditional camera-less photographic printing process, students harnessed the power of UV light to produce striking Prussian blue prints.
The art department was buzzing with energy and the students produced some truly exceptional, atmospheric work.

Criminologists look at the reasons why people commit crimes and find ways to reduce re-offending. If you enjoy sociology and like to learn about society and culture, this could be the career for you. It’s also important to have analytical and written communication skills, with a good eye for detail. You could become a policy adviser on crime reduction with the government, the police or the probation service.

What an incredible Sports Day! It was inspiring to see every student giving their best, competing with determination and proudly representing their Houses: Gamma, Sigma, Delta and Omega. The day was filled with energy, teamwork, and House spirit.
A huge thank you to our PE Department for organising such a fantastic event, and to our Heads of House for championing and supporting their students throughout the day. Well done to everyone involved!

This week we had our final WildEd workshop in which we celebrated the amazing work our students have accomplished this year. The new plants and herbs are thriving and the pond is looking fantastic. Well Done to all students who took part!!

🏙️ SHAPE MY CITY — Applications are OPEN!
Is your teenager interested in architecture, design, or how communities are built? Shape My City is a free, year-long talent accelerator for 15–18 year olds across Bristol and the South West.
Over 10 monthly sessions, they will explore careers in city design, build confidence and teamwork skills, and work on real projects to help shape the future of our region.
When: Oct 2026 – July 2027 (First Wednesday of every month, 5–7pm)
Cost: FREE (plus £5 provided each night for food/travel)
Commitment: Places are competitive and fully funded by local businesses, so a commitment to the full year is required.

From 25 June to 1 September 2026, the Government is temporarily cutting VAT from 20% to 5% on children's meals in restaurants, children and family tickets to cinemas, theatres, concerts and exhibitions, and admission to a wide range of attractions. Combined with free bus travel during August for children aged 5 to 15 in England, families and young people will be able to enjoy experiences that make summer special, including visits to the kinds of cultural and educational attractions that enrich children's lives outside the classroom.
The government has launched an attraction finder website which allows families to type in their postcode and find participating venues near them to make the most of summer savings. To use the attraction finder, please visit https://summersavings.gov.uk.

Early Years Transition Webinar: Information is now live on our notice board for families preparing for early years transitions.
SEND Coffee Mornings: We are looking into hosting a coffee morning here for our families to share experiences, get advice, and help shape local services. 98% of parents who attend say they feel better supported.
