The CHALLENGE

Original challenge

Brief description: "We are obsolete. Kids are using tech & moving in digital worlds in ways we don’t understand. How do we keep current & understand digital language, motivations, & social lives of students so we can better shape their learning experiences positively?"

A difficult challenge in education: "Students are moving in the digital world in ways we don’t understand. The tools, the vocabulary… they even have their own social norms that we are outside of. And it’s all a moving target!

But what if we DID understand some of what is happening in the current moment… and used that knowledge to create more supportive and better learning environments for our students? We don’t have to LIVE in their digital world, but if we had a better understanding of what goes on outside of what we just see and hear in the hallways… we could create more supportive environments in the classrooms, in our counseling areas, and even in our administrative decisions… this challenge is about acknowledging the digital world our students inhabit and using that knowledge to enhance their learning experiences."

Working challenge

Bring our high school students together with admin, staff, and home so all have a basic comprehension of how students find, share, and experience media. Reduce the fear of teen digital device use and increase the understanding for all regarding what is happening in the student brain in the educational environment. Create a school-wide experience that reinforces the positive impact of large-scale digital media use and encourage 'digital leadership'.

The INSPIRATION

"... students cannot be taught about the role of media in their lives... if those who teach them do not have a basic comprehension of how students find, share and experience media."

-- ICMPA/Univ Maryland Research

"... Digital Leadership... using the vast reach of technology (especially the use of social media) to improve the lives, well-being, and circumstances of others."

-- G Couros
