There are many barriers to academic success, and academic-related anxieties are a common one. College students are tasked with many responsibilities, expectations, and assignments that it can feel overwhelming at times. The Center for Academic Success (as well as other departments such as The Well student counseling services) recognize this and want to provide resources to combat common academic-related anxieties. Establishing effective coping techniques, stress management advice and combating test anxiety will help you stay on course to academic success and rid yourself of anxiousness.

Effective coping skills are not inherent to students--they are a learned skill for combating harmful and/or stressful situations. Throughout the course of your college years, you will undoubtedly encounter situations that are stressful or cause you distress. Be proactive and ready for such situations by having identified Coping Techniques ready to bounce back from adversity.

Every college students faces Test Anxiety at some point during their time pursuing higher education. Test anxiety, while an unpleasant sentiment, can be effectively managed with the right toolkit. Review the above resource to equip yourself with the tools necessary to combat test anxiety.

Mindfulness is another tool to alleviate stress and anxiety. It involves becoming hyper aware of your senses and environment. This shift in perception helps dissolve what is causing you stress and/or making you anxious due to the radical shift in your perception and awareness. This exercise requires a great deal of discipline, focus and intentionality, and is often difficult to initially achieve without assistance. If you would like assistance, a counselor from The Well would be happy to assist you!

Within the Center for Academic Success (CAS) “Academic Anxiety” is defined as the anxiety exhibited from academic-related stressors, inhibiting a student from quality educational attainment. This includes potential stressors from attending classes, focusing during in-class sessions, studying academic materials, reading textbooks, working with classmates in group assignments and formal test taking. The assistance CAS provides for Academic Anxiety is not intended to redress general comprehensive anxiety and/or anxiety related to other health issues. CAS will refer students to The Well student counseling services if it is determined that a student possesses additional stressors and/or habitual anxiety outside the scope of “Academic Anxiety”. Furthermore, CAS’ Academic Anxiety Support is not a medical treatment, instead utilizing cognitive behavioral therapeutic approaches and research-based literature on combating academic-related anxiety within higher education institutions.
