Fabulae scriptum

Sol calidissime ardet.

Leo in arida terra ambulat, sitiens. Per arbores vastas lente procedit.

Ad aquam accedit, sed leonem percutit ingens bos.

Vulneratus ille se recipit ad arbores.

Sub arbore iacet et somniare coepit. Animalia videt:

Zebras et dorcades currentes, aves volantes, pangolinem volventem, rhinocerum, camelopardales–multa animalia.

Postridie leo evigilat et circumspectat.

mox lux fit clarior; sol oritur. Arbores vastas ubīque videt. Sol calidissime ardet. Aliquid faciendum est.

Ingens bos caput tollit et murmurat; arbor cadit; leo magna voce fremit.

Leo ad ingentem bovem celerius currit. Alter alterum ad stagnum spectat.

Ille leonem petit et temptat leonem conspicere. Subito leo oppugnat.

In caelo aves pipiant. Sol lucet.

Leo matura cum iuba pubescit. In scopulo leo regnum spectat et adnuit.

Reading Comprehension

If animals could talk! After hearing the story of the Lion, write a short dialogue (at least three turns each) between the lion and the water buffalo and then insert their words into the script. Who would speak first? Would the lion make a request? A complaint? A command? What is the water buffalo’s perspective?

Reflection

  1. During the battle with the water buffalo, the lion is driven into a rock. When he gets up, his shadow seems to come alive. Why do the filmmakers include this image of the lion? Other animals seem to come alive at various times during the film. What might these signify?

  1. Water scarcity affects both animal and human habitats. For example, 1.1 billion people worldwide lack access to water, and a total of 2.7 billion find water scarce for at least one month of the year (World Wildlife Fund). Agriculture uses 70% of the world’s accessible freshwater, but some 60% of this is wasted due to leaky irrigation systems, inefficient application methods as well as the cultivation of crops that are too thirsty for the environment in which they are grown (WWF). How might we, like the lion, protect our dwindling water resources?
