One’s mindset is consumed by assumptions and beliefs that are held by an individual or even by a group. This view of the world can be altered so quickly by what one says, acts, or shares. With this being said, the rigor of the IB brings upon fear and wraps students in an unhealthy knot, which contributes to an unhealthy mindset. What should be addressed to students to obtain a positive mindset, especially in this rigorous program, is that there are resources available to make it quite manageable.
Being an IB student has opened my eyes to the need for a clear and strong mindset as many expectations come from within the program, usually bringing upon fear of failure. As a Freshman being introduced into the program, doing well made me quite excited to learn and grow as an individual. This positive outlook towards an intense program set me on a great path and ultimately made me eager to learn. Approaching Sophomore Year, a lot of nerves built within me, but I still had no doubts or fears of failing. As the program and curriculum intensely elevated, this triggered my well-being into a state of panic. Hearing talk about how hard the courses forthcoming were going to be brought upon a weakening and frightful mentality, especially in addition to the ongoing stress from the AP's I had already been taking. As I continued to study, balance extracurriculars, and manage my social life, I began to acknowledge this state of fear overpowers an individual to the point where it creates a state of paralyzation, essentially preventing one from succeeding. This results in many students having poor health, overwhelming amounts of anxiety, and even in some cases depression. This worrisome mindset influenced by others' opinions and mindsets affected my behaviors as I spent a lot of my day overthinking and becoming anxious. Acknowledging that the program was going to have obstacles along with stress was the first step in creating a healthy mindset. It indeed is normal to have stress to a certain degree, especially in a rigorous academy, because it challenges and motivates an individual.
Aside from constantly overworking myself with other people's thoughts and fears, I realized that there are a multitude of support systems within the academy that contribute to a thriving mindset. One factor within the school setting is the amazing IB Counselor, Mrs. Ortiz, as well as the IB Lead Teacher, Mrs. Wise. These two individuals are always willing to work with students and offer instruction and support, whether this is emotionally or mentally, further affecting the behaviors of individuals. With the guidance of these two individuals, students are able to pave the way for a better outlook on their struggles. Whether this is providing students with academic support, such as tutoring, or even mental support or outlets for stress, they create an ideal space for growth towards a hopeful and optimistic mindset.
All and all, with a healthy mindset one is able to accomplish a lot. When one views the struggles and obstacles in life with light and perseverance, all is possible.
