IB Students! The extended essay is one of the major components of the IB diploma. At first glance, it’s terrifying, but with the proper tips and guidance can be manageable.
The extended essay is an exploration paper focused on the IB topic of our choosing (literature, history, world studies, sciences, etc.). It tends to be on average 4000 words. You will focus on a specific topic, and through research you will come to a conclusion within your paper.
I’m glad you asked! As I undergo the EE process, I have learned a few tips in order to succeed!
First, focus on something you are truly passionate about.
I know since it’s an academic paper, you may think at first it’s difficult to find a topic you are interested in, but as you learn more about the specifics about the EE, you will realize that there are a lot of options for topics. Settle on something that you will truly enjoy further research on for about a year.
Second, create mini-deadlines for yourself.
Most of us IB students tend to procrastinate deadlines to the last minute, it’s a bad habit of ours. In order to not procrastinate these hard deadlines for the EE, make mini-deadlines for yourself in order to organize your time. Tell yourself the next component is due about a week earlier than it actually is, so that way you’ll finish before the deadline, and won’t have to stress the night of! You can take the extra time to look it over, and revise if necessary.
Third, ask your supervisor questions.
Our supervisors are here to help! If you’re confused about anything: the research, what is needed to make your paper better, etc, don’t be afraid to ask your supervisor questions. They know, and understand the process. It’s imperative to work with our supervisors in order to succeed.
Finally, start brainstorming as soon as possible.
Arguably, one of the more difficult parts of the EE is finding a topic. For the pre-IB students, start looking into topics you might be interested in as you begin to learn about the EE in further depth. Research the general categories you think you’ll want to pursue. Don’t stress it though.
I hope these tips can help you, and your journey. Best of luck!
