For decades, the undisputed battle to determine which fast food chain has the best fried chicken sandwich has caused serious civil unrest. Today we, Cara and Alex, decide which fast food chain has the best chicken sandwich and fries. The contenders are two of the most well-known restaurants that specialize in chicken: Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Chick-fil-A.
We began our journey by traveling to Popeyes, where we purchased the Classic Chicken Sandwich and their cajun fries. The sandwich was $3.99 and the fries were $1.79, for a total of $5.78.
Next, we headed to Chick-fil-A and ordered the Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich and Chick-fil-A Waffle Potato Fries. The sandwich was $3.05 and the fries were $1.55, for a total of $4.60.
Cara’s gray Honda Civic was quickly filled with the mouth-watering aroma of fried chicken as we drove home for the taste test.
We began by unpacking both sandwiches. The first thing we noticed was the vast difference in size between the two. The Popeyes sandwich was much larger than Chick-fil-A’s. While both sandwiches came with pickles, the Popeyes sandwich came with their own version of spicy mayo.
The fries were different as well. The Chick-fil-A fries were waffle cut, while the Popeyes fries were regular skinny rectangles. The Popeyes fries appeared to be seasoned and were dark brown, while the Chick-fil-A fries lacked any sort of seasoning whatsoever.
We started by trying the Popeyes fries, and they were delicious. The crispy coating and seasoning just about knocked our socks off. Next we tried the Chick-fil-A waffle-cut fries, and they were very bland in comparison.
We moved on to the chicken sandwiches, and we began with Popeyes. We both took a big bite, and once again, we were impressed. The chicken was crispy and of very high quality, and the fluffy bun created a perfect bite. The sauce was fantastic, and was the perfect addition to the already delicious sandwich.
Next, we turned to the Chick-fil-A sandwich and took our first bite. While the sandwich had good flavor, it was underwhelming compared to its competitor. The chicken lacked that good crunch that we all look for in a chicken sandwich. The taste, however, was adequate.
While Chick-fil-A is slightly cheaper, is it clear that Popeyes came out on top in this fast food showdown. Considering that we are both avid lovers of Chick-fil-A, and that the popularity of Chick-fil-A has seemed to triumph over Popeyes in recent times, these results were shocking. We can both confidently say that we will be making a trip back to Popeyes very soon, and we recommend that you try it out as well.
