Oxfordshire Big Science Event

A number of teams from Year 5 and 6 have attended Miss Moore’s Friday Lunchtime Science Club over the last 2 terms. During the sessions, the children had the chance to be real scientists! They were given the task of designing, planning and carrying out their very own scientific investigations. The children were encouraged to develop a range of skills including problem solving, accuracy and team work. The ideas were all very different. Groups used cymbals, helium balloons, candles and fizzy drinks!

The children worked hard and created 4 eye catching posters for judging. Mr Elkington had the hard job of judging the posters. He spoke to each group about their project and spent a long time deliberating – he said he found it very hard to choose just one as they were all fantastic! However, after much consideration, the poster he chose to progress to the next stage of the Oxfordshire Big Science Event was the team from Mrs Tomlins’ class - Ellie May Honour, Kieran Hornsey and Laura Toome – who investigated the question “Does the type of fizzy drink used alter the amount of fizz when Mentos are added?” Well done team!

As a reward, the children who took part were treated to a visit from Dr Whannel, a Science teacher and the former Head of Science from The Cooper School. The children enjoyed sharing their work with Dr Whannel and received high praise. He said he was looking forward to teaching the children Science if they went to Cooper.

Further judging should be taking place in the next couple of weeks so watch this space for further updates. All posters are going to be on display in the Small Hall.
