Our Story 

A historic gem with a bright future, the Lebowsky Center for Performing Arts is more than just a building— it’s the enduring heartbeat of our community. Our story began in 1926, as a vaudeville theatre, then transformed into the Capitol Theater, a grand movie palace designed to transport audiences to new worlds. For decades, its stage and screen were a source of joy and imagination for the Shiawassee region. While the years brought changes, the spirit of that original vision never faded. A devastating fire in 2007 wrote a new chapter in our story. Saved from demolition by a group of passionate community leaders, the theatre was reborn. Thanks to the generosity of countless supporters, it was meticulously restored and reopened as the Lebowsky Center for Performing Arts, dedicated to keeping the magic of live performance alive for generations to come.

Our mission is simple yet powerful: to produce quality performing arts that educate, entertain and enrich the community, while preserving our historic theater. Today, we are a vibrant hub for creativity, education, and entertainment. We are where local children take their first steps onto a stage, where talented community actors bring classic stories to life, and where national touring acts share their gifts with our town. We are a gathering place for friends and family, an educational resource for students, and a cultural anchor that contributes to the economic vitality of Owosso and the entire Shiawassee region. Every seat in our theatre represents a story—a first date, a cherished family tradition, a moment of pure inspiration.
