The Laingsburg Clothesline opened in 2006 after noticing a first-grade student, who wore a darling, bright red Clifford raincoat. As adorable as that was when school started in the fall, it became obvious that it was the ONLY coat he ever wore even in the bitter winter weather with no apparent boots, mittens or a hat. Students were trying to run in gym class wearing shoes that were way too big and fit the feet of their older siblings. The clothing need was hard to watch, very real, and growing… 

Two adjoining, dilapidated buildings in downtown Laingsburg were for sale. After much renovation of one space, new roof, flooring, total interior remodel, we have been serving as enthusiastic volunteers to our community and various counties (Shiawassee, Clinton and Ingham) for almost 20 years. We offer high quality, gently used or new clothes at low prices or free to those referred to us through the schools, churches, the fire dept., and various other agencies. As a mini distribution center, we redistribute excess clothing donations to local agencies in Owosso, where the items are given away for free to those in need!

The Connection… 

Remember we bought two adjoining buildings that shared a common brick wall. For years, we have discussed as a board what to do with the other dumpy building that needed total renovation as well. Many businesses in town wanted to purchase it and our board held strong for a clear message for the purpose of this second space. Then, Covid hit, and the answer was very evident. The students had missed way too much school during the lock down, many were suffering not only educationally, but had been socially isolated for far too long. 

So, here began the second phase of completing yet another building which we call The Connection. We excitedly opened last year in 2024 and immediately began FREE tutoring to our first through fifth graders two days a week who are dropped off by the school bus right after school. We’ve hired a part time program director to facilitate learning, who is a middle school resource room teacher. The students are thriving, the parents and teachers are thrilled, and the eighth graders have been wonderful tutors along with some retired and substitute teachers. 

This brand new, beautiful space is now open to our community which has been used by various civic groups to host events, Bible studies, cards for Christ, young art exhibits, and literacy events over the summer months. We’re very excited about the future use of this building. Working currently on a strategic plan with our consultant, we now have a young board of nine people, who bring so much expertise and wisdom to the table. One of our former board members, who was with us near the beginning, was on city council and was a builder. He offered to assist with the renovation of The Clothesline and just recently we happened to see him with tears in his eyes at The Connection. Upon approaching him, he gave me a huge hug and said he was picking up his grandson, who was now being tutored. He was amazed at how we had come full circle and finished The Connection, which his own family was now reaping the benefits. 

Just recently at graduation, the salutatorian spoke about being inspired by her former teachers to learn more in school than just the curriculum. Be an influencer in your community and make a difference! She encouraged her fellow classmates to do likewise wherever they find themselves after graduation. We are always looking for dedicated tutors and donors to help us continue to offer free tutoring and cover expenses. We’d love to have your support!
