Letterland, Conval's phonics program for grades K-2, works alongside our current Literacy program, Reading Street. Letterland is a researched based curriculum which has been popular in Europe for many years and is quickly gaining popularity here in the U.S. For the first month of school K students will be introduced to two letters a day, and will learn a character, movement and sound associated with each letter as it is introduced. Each letter has a story, and when we begin blending sounds (letters) into words, the characters interact to keep this a fun and lively process. It is similar to a program that I have used successfully over the years, but adds new teaching and learning strategies that support learning in fun and engaging ways!

Handwriting Without tears is our writing program. Before the children begin writing letters with pencil and paper they have many opportunities to practice forming letters with wooden pieces shaped like lines and curves, on child sized chalkboards with chalk and a small sponge, and by tracing letters with their fingers. Of course, before we even begin with letters we have some fun with the wooden shapes!
