2nd & 3rd Graders explored who is allowed to vote in America for this Social Studies unit. They wondered what are barriers to voting that women, Black people, Native Americans, and others have faced, and how do people vote in America?
After learning about the importance of voting, students went through the election process to name their new class pets. They started by registering to vote.
A challenge during the election was for students to manage their emotions - it is hard to accept an outcome you don’t like! It was also challenging for students to come up with supporting reasons for their opinions on a topic as big and abstract as voting.
Students learned about the history of voting in this country as it relates to African Americans, women, and Native Americans. They thought and reflected about what it means to be free and who deserves the right to vote. They learned that some prisoners can’t vote when they get out of prison and that that may change in California after the election because people will vote on it. Students formed an opinion about this, too. They wrote their first argumentative paragraphs and recorded them on FlipGrid to share with others.
Students shared their opinions on who should be able to vote. They practiced sharing and listening to opinions respectfully, and making strong arguments with reasons.
Now students are wondering... how can we change who is allowed to vote?
