Welcome to 5th grade’s Country, Rhiglog!
For this trimester we have been seeking the answer to the question, what is government and what is my role in our government?
We started out this unit by asking students to share what they knew about the government on this padlet. As you can see, many students had no idea what a government is!
With upcoming elections, we needed to have a very clear understanding of what government is, what our government does for us and what we can do for our country. Next, we looked at several different types of government in the world, some of which are a monarchy, an oligarchy, and a democracy. Then students were posed with the question, what type of government we should have in our classroom? The overwhelming majority of students felt we should have a democracy, so we decided to set up our own classroom government.
We began by researching the US constitution. We read article I, II, and III to learn how our own government is designed to have three branches that share power equally. Students were most surprised to see how little power the president actually has, through the checks and balance system. Our classroom outlined some articles of our constitution.
After learning about some of our rights as people, we learned that nowhere in our constitution does it mention these rights. Well, we were outraged! So we decided we needed to make our first ratification to our country’s Constitution and added a Bill of Rights.
As we started creating our country we also democratically created a name, a class flag, a class symbol, and the most fierce competition was with the class seal. Students then practiced writing paragraphs by explaining what they learned about government. Read them here!
We learned that our country has not always made smart decisions when it came to slavery, Native Americans, and minorities; but we are constantly striving to make it better. This is every student's right and responsibility to help their communities by participating in government.
